10th Annual Subaru 'Share the Love®' Event Revs Up for Holiday Campaign Benefiting Make-A-Wish®

SOURCE:Subaru of America

DESCRIPTION:

Subaru of America, Inc. recently announced the launch of the 10th annual Share the Love® Event which will, for the seventh year, benefit Make-A-Wish America. Funds raised through the automaker's Share the Love event will help grant more life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses.

Running November 16, 2017 through January 2, 2018, Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the purchaser's or lessee's choice of four participating national charities, including Make-A-Wish. Participating Subaru retailers can select a fifth, hometown charity, from their local community in which customers can direct their support. Several Subaru retailers have selected their local Make-A-Wish chapter as their hometown charity.

Funds from the Share the Love event help grant wishes for kids like Sage, who last year, appeared in a Subaru television commercial. Upon meeting Sage, Subaru knew they wanted to help grant her wish. Sage wished to visit Jackson Hole, Wyoming—an area she knew to have some of the best snowboarding in the U.S. Sage said her wish meant that "nobody's telling me to go get blood work, or go get a scan right now. Having a wish helps kids like me know there's something that's going to be better than what we've been going through this whole time." See more of Sage's wish here.

Flying High With Purpose- Carbon Reduction Challenge Student Blog Series

By Elizabeth Jang

SUMMARY:

Georgia Tech student, Elizabeth Jang describes how various programs, including the Carbon Reduction Challenge have increased her love of the environment.

DESCRIPTION:

Reprinted with permission from the Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business at the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business

A number of recent experiences have deepened my appreciation for the environment and have made me more aware of the importance of being a steward for the environment. For instance, I had the opportunity to study abroad at Georgia Tech’s Lorraine campus for my Spring 2016 semester. As I travelled on my own, I quickly discovered that I preferred exploring mountains to the city. Climbing high and seeing a new location from above, I gained a greater appreciation of a place. Whenever I went on a hike, I felt the responsibility to do my part in preserving the environment so that in the future I could return to these same places to rediscover their natural beauty. On another trip overseas—this time to Asia—I once again felt the duty to live in a more environmentally-friendly way. I had to wear a facemask to protect my lungs because the air was so thick with smog. Even after I went home and was able to live mask-free, I felt sad for the people who lived there since they weren’t able to breathe fresh air. I also hoped that America would never become so polluted that its citizens would need to wear masks. A final recent inspiration for my commitment to the environment has come from my sister who has decided to live a zero-waste life. I have been learning a great deal from her about how much trash one person generates in his or her lifetime, and how even a small act (such as not using straws) can impact the environment for the better.

2017 in Review: The GRI Sustainability Standards One Year On

0
0

SOURCE:GRI

DESCRIPTION:

This year has been challenging for sustainability in many respects, but there have also been exciting developments in the sustainability reporting landscape. In this short series, we look back at GRI’s efforts, and at what 2018 has in store.

A year after the launch of the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards, 2017 saw the first reports released. While a group of Standards Pioneers were the first to dive in, one year on, tens of thousands of copies have been accessed, and more than 3,000 people have had a direct introduction to the GRI Standards through 28 launch events in 25 countries.

Since organizations were navigating the GRI Standards for the first time, GRI provided an introductory training course and a GRI Standards exam. Also, a new module on reporting and human rights was launched in March in Ghana, to help companies take their human rights reporting further.

Tackling Emerging Issues

And because reporting topics are not always straightforward, GRI helps reporting organizations tackle emerging issues, complex topics and pressing problems through different events and publications. For example, in February GRI held its first Reporters’ Summit in the US, bringing reporters from across North America together to build their knowledge and skills, in hands-on, practical workshops. The event is being held for the second time in February 2018, and places are still available. And in June 2017, GRI launched the publication Can corporate reporting help end poverty?– the result of a research project analysing more than 100 reports, showing the gaps in poverty reporting and revealing the role of reporting in poverty alleviation. A follow up study, Corporate reporting on poverty, will be published mid-January 2018.

Another way in which GRI supports companies is by encouraging them to come together virtually and in person through different Corporate Leadership Groups (CLGs) on emerging or challenging topics in reporting. These groups connect leading reporting organizations to explore specific topics and produce guidance for other reporters. In these unique forums, they can share experiences and provide feedback securely and anonymously, so they can develop their own reporting, and lead the way in that topic. In 2017, two groups were run simultaneously: the CLG on Integrated Reporting and the Corporate Action Group on Reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals.

As mentioned above, companies started reporting with the new GRI Standards as of this year. But, as the global best practice for reporting, the GRI Standards cannot stand still. That is why in February, the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) announced the development of Standards updates for GRI 303: Water, and GRI 403: Occupational Health and Safety. More recently, the GSSB has begun:

So you can expect more updates in 2018. And stay tuned for part 2 of GRI’s Year in Review, to learn more about GRI’s work on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Hurricane Harvey Holiday Meal

Hormel Foods and Jennie-O Turkey Store help those in need

SOURCE:Hormel Foods Corporation

DESCRIPTION:

By Kelly Braaten

With the aroma of turkey, ham and all the fixings in the air, and music playing in the background, volunteers served a holiday meal for more than 1,000 people affected by Hurricane Harvey at Celebration of Life Church in Baytown, Texas.

“Hurricane Harvey was one of the biggest disasters we’ve seen in recent years,” said Stacy Lamb, U.S. response director of disaster services at Convoy of Hope. “People’s lives have been turned upside down. They are still trying to figure out how to get their homes back in shape and back to normal, and then you have the holiday season.”

When Hormel Foods learned about the holiday meal that was being planned, the company donated over 700 Hormel® Cure 81® hams and its Jennie-O Turkey Store subsidiary donated over 700 turkeys. Convoy of Hope helped prepare the meal and distributed the remainder of the hams and turkeys to attendees to take home and to other churches in the area to help with their holiday meals.

“Getting donations from Hormel Foods and Jennie-O Turkey Store was huge because that meant we could bless that many more families with a holiday meal,” Lamb said. “We are very appreciative of Hormel Foods and Jennie-O Turkey Store for coming down and assisting with the meal.”

Supporting disaster relief

Hormel Foods provides food donations to organizations such as Feeding America and Convoy of Hope for hunger-relief efforts. The company has been a supporter of Feeding America since the 1970s and began working with Convoy of Hope around four years ago. In the beginning of the partnership with Convoy of Hope, the company helped support its events in communities across the country to provide groceries and other services such as haircuts and dental screenings. The partnership quickly expanded to include disaster-relief efforts.

In early 2017, Hormel Foods helped stock Convoy of Hope’s warehouse with shelf-stable protein products that could be deployed quickly to help with disaster-response efforts. Convoy of Hope responded to Hurricane Harvey Aug. 25 and began distributing much-needed protein and other supplies immediately.

It has been a busy year for the organization, which has also responded to the natural disasters in Florida, Puerto Rico, Mexico and California. To provide additional support, the company’s Applegate and CytoSport subsidiaries also donated products, and Hormel Foods provided a monetary donation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by the recent natural disasters and those in need this holiday season,” said Stephanie Postma, Hormel® Cure 81® ham brand manager at Hormel Foods. “We were touched to be able to be part of such a special event.”

In addition to the meal, there were activities for kids and musical performances – even one from Mandisa, an American gospel and contemporary Christian recording artist and former “American Idol” contestant.

“When we heard about this event to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey and others in need, we knew we wanted to help,” said Brent Koosmann, director of marketing at Jennie-O Turkey Store. “We were honored to provide the turkeys for this event.”

According to Postma, who helped serve the meal, attendees were extremely grateful, and it was nothing but a steady stream of smiles through the receiving line.

“Everybody we’ve worked with is very thankful for Convoy and others who have been able to come to the area and help them get through this tragic event,” Lamb said. “It is why we do what we do at Convoy of Hope, and why I do what I do personally.”

Hormel Foods is committed to doing its part to help others and is in the process of making another donation to help stock Convoy of Hope’s warehouse for additional disaster-relief efforts.

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

The Major League Baseball Players Association had quite a year in 2017, on and off the field, as the union began its second 50 years of advancing and protecting players' rights.

Advancing players' interests took on exciting new forms in 2017 as Executive Director Tony Clark sought to broaden the player fraternity's reach by strengthening ties to the former player community, providing new and better platforms for active players to engage with fans and moving ahead with the vision of building a solid foundation to support and develop youth baseball around the world.

Among the year's highlights was the launch of Infield Chatter, a social media app that connects the players with their fans in a fun, moderated environment; the playing of the fourth and most successful World Baseball Classic tournament; the first-ever Players Weekend and the creation of new inroads into trying to secure the sport's future through a growing number of youth programs such as the “Players Going Home” initiative.

The Community Tree Recovery Program was Created out of the Great Need for Trees in the Wake of Natural Disasters.

SOURCE:Arbor Day Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

Trees play a vital role in our everyday lives. They improve the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink. They beautify our streets and shade our children. So when natural disasters strike, the loss of trees is much more than meets the eye. The Community Tree Recovery Program was created out of the great need for trees in the wake of natural disasters.

Through this program, residents who lost trees in major disasters caused by wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and insects can receive free trees to plant in their yards. This work is critical for re-establishing neighborhood trees…as well as a sense of community.

You can help bring healing and hope to communities and the people who live there. Visit arborday.org to learn how.

2017 in Review: Tools for Non-financial Reporting

0

SOURCE:GRI

DESCRIPTION:

This year has been challenging for sustainability in many respects, but there have also been exciting developments in the sustainability reporting landscape. In this short series, we look back at GRI’s efforts, and at what 2018 has in store.

2017 was a pivotal year for corporate sustainability reporting, and GRI led the way with new research and the continuous development of standards to help companies be more transparent. In February, GRI and CSR Europe hosted a webinar and started working on a publication on the implementation of the new European Directive that sees large companies in Europe reporting on their non-financial performance.

The EU Directive on Non-financial and Diversity Information was published in 2014, and Member States were given until the end of 2016 to incorporate it in national law. 2017 is the first year that the new legislation is applied throughout Europe. GRI was closely involved in the drafting process of the Directive and welcomed its adoption in 2014.

Working with CSR Europe, GRI created a platform for collecting information through the two organizations’ networks, and provided updates and analysis as the legislative landscape developed. The result of this project was a new publication, launched in November 2017: Member State Implementation of the Directive 2014/95/EU.

This legislation can help companies be more transparent, supporting their stakeholder engagement and ultimately benefiting the bottom line. And by using the GRI Standards for their reporting, they can ensure high quality disclosures: a study by US-based consulting firm the Governance and Accountability Institute Inc., released in July, showed that companies that follow GRI’s sustainability reporting framework provide higher quality disclosures than those that do not.

The Biggest Event at Rose Bowl Stadium Helps Feed Hundreds Locally

Rose Bowl Stadium concessions provider SodexoMAGIC donated leftover food to Pasadena Hot Meal Program for seventh consecutive year and nearly $100,000 per game to volunteer organizations

SOURCE:Sodexo, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

GAITHERSBURG, Md., January 2, 2018 /3BL Media/ - More than 90,000 fans were gathered yesterday at the Rose Bowl Stadium for the venue’s biggest event of the year. Following the event, the stadium’s concessions partner, SodexoMAGIC, a partnership with Magic Johnson Enterprises and Sodexo, a food services and facilities management company, fed hundreds in need when it donated remaining food items to the Pasadena Hot Meal Program just as it has done for the past seven years.

Additionally, SodexoMAGIC donated a percentage of its sales to local organizations that provided volunteers to help sell concessions on game day. Donations per game reach nearly $100,000. To date, SodexoMAGIC has donated nearly $600,000 annually.

“We rely on our community to help us deliver a great game day experience,” said Kevin Hengehold, SodexoMAGIC General Manager at the Rose Bowl Stadium, who turned a three-person team into 1,000 each game with the help of volunteers from high schools, churches and community groups and 11 food and beverage venues into a showcase of 100 local restaurants and vendors. “Donating a hot meal after each game gives us another opportunity to do our part and in a meaningful way."

After each event, Hengehold lets Pasadena Hot Meal Program Founder Robin Salzer know at what time he should back up his van to the SodexoMAGIC warehouse at the stadium and, together with the SodexoMAGIC team, they fill the van will food items — hot dogs, hamburgers, pretzels, nacho chips and more. At times, the group has received as many as 1,500 hot dogs in a single donation. Salzer says water bottles are the most appreciated item because Hot Meal Program patrons can take them home.

“SodexoMAGIC has been an integral part of the program since its inception,” said Salzer, who is also the owner of local restaurant Robin’s Woodfire Barbecue and a featured vendor at the stadium for the past five years. “With their help, we are able to sustain our operation and feed thousands every year.”

Earlier in December, Pasadena Hot Meal Program celebrated feeding over 125,000 people locally. It welcomes volunteers of all ages and operates Friday through Sunday in the Jackie Robinson Community Center in Pasadena, Calif.

SodexoMAGIC’s commitment to the community is rooted in its partnership with Magic Johnson Enterprises, owned by Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a longtime supporter and investor in communities across the U.S. and Sodexo. It was formed in 2006 to empower communities with best-in-class food and facilities management solutions, including menus drawing on the expertise of Celebrity Chef G Garvin and healthy solutions from health expert and author Dr. Ian Smith. SodexoMAGIC recently celebrated a 10-year anniversary and boasts nearly 5,000 employees located across 49 clients and 1600 sites.

Sodexo USA is an American business that is part of a global, Fortune 500 company with a presence in 80 countries. Delivering more than 100 services across North America that enhance organizational performance, contribute to local communities and improve quality of life, Sodexo is a leading provider of sustainable, integrated facilities management and food service operations. It employs 123,000 Americans at 12,500 sites across the country and indirectly supports tens of thousands of additional U.S. jobs through its annual purchases of $9.2 billion in goods and services from small to large American businesses. In support of local communities across the U.S., the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation has contributed close to $30 million over the past 20 years to help feed children in America impacted by hunger.

Seven branches remain closed due to storm damage, leaving communities without access to the libraries’ vital programs and resources. Building on JetBlue’s signature Soar with Reading literacy program, volunteers on this trip checked in with elementary schools that were impacted by Harvey, have low literacy rates and where their libraries are still closed. Volunteers helped operate “pop-up” libraries and hosted reading events, with books donated in partnership with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. JetBlue also brought in its innovative free book vending, powered by IVS, to Houston to distribute 25,000 children’s books throughout the remainder of the year.
  • #CheckInForGood to Help the Sandals Foundation’s Local Caribbean Community Efforts - The Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals and Beaches Resorts, is committed to improving the lives of its local communities, supporting schools, facilities and centers across eight islands in the Caribbean. Volunteers on this trip helped renovate the Eltham Community Centre, a gathering place for recreational activities. Volunteers helped to renovate and restore The Centre to ensure it can continue to be a safe, healthy and inspiring space for both the young and elderly in the community.
  • #CheckInForGood to Help Atlantis Blue Project Foundation – Bahamas - The Bahamas is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world. Its sustainability is vital to the marine ecosystem and protecting shorelines and preserving beaches. Led by marine ecologist Dr. Craig Dahlgren of the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, an organization developing innovative ways to protect Bahamian waters and wildlife, volunteers on this trip participated in an ongoing coral nursery project on Paradise Island and assisted with harvesting and out-planting coral.

De Beers Group Provides a Solution for a School's Crowded Classrooms

Pupils at a primary school in South Africa have three new classrooms thanks to some heavy lifting machinery from De Beers Group’s Venetia mine.

SOURCE:De Beers Group

DESCRIPTION:

The mine sent in a lowbed truck and crane and partnered with local contractors to transport unused mobile classrooms from Alldays High School to the nearby Alldays Primary School in Limpopo Province, saving the school R150,000, which is what it would otherwise have cost to move them.

The move took three weeks – because it had to be fitted in between operations at Venetia mine.

School Principal Moyahabo Sebata praised De Beers Group for its assistance, saying: “It is a relief for us as teachers and learners. Our classrooms were congested and we are now able to move around and are better able to control the learners.”

Before these new classrooms arrived, 105 grade 5 (aged 12-13) students at Alldays Primary School shared a single class, and others in the school shared similarly crowded classrooms.  Now class sizes at the school, which has about 1,000 pupils, have been reduced to just over 50 children per class.

Corporate Affairs Manager Josephine Pieters at De Beers Group said: “We and our contracting partners welcomed the opportunity to come on board as a partner to improve the learning environment for these learners and give them a better chance at achieving academic success.”

Can a Shipping Container Increase Access to Hands-on STEM?

By Amanda Baker

SOURCE:MilliporeSigma

DESCRIPTION:

Designing STEM outreach programs for K-12 classrooms often becomes a balancing act between ambitious goals and limited resources. Scientific equipment is just one kind of resource, but one that is unavailable to many schools. Time is a less obvious resource, but time away from classroom curriculum is becoming increasingly hard for teachers to justify with their administrators. And personal access to relevant experts – face time with actual scientists – is a resource that many programs don’t even get to add to their wish lists.

With countless approaches being taken around the country, it should come only as a slight surprise that at least one group would get a shipping container, paint it yellow, fill it with lab equipment, and then send it on a cross-country tour staffed with volunteer scientists. That is exactly what the MilliporeSigma did this year with its Curiosity Cube.
