Never Too Old for Family, Adoptive Parents Finally Bring Home Their Son at Age 20

SOURCE:Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption

DESCRIPTION:

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption believes you are never too old for family and the Betancourt family is a deep believer in that notion as well.

Their oldest son (whose name they chose to keep private) lived in foster care since he was 13. His siblings were adopted by the Betancourt’s, but he simply wasn’t ready to be adopted. He was told he would always have a family. He aged out of foster care at age 18, but finally two years later he was ready to take the Betancourt last name.

His mom says, “At 17, our son was struggling with the idea of family. He aged out of foster care by choice and we waited. Finally, at 20, he was ready to take our name, but he was ALWAYS our son.”

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is dedicated to dramatically increasing the number of adoptions from foster care. The Foundation focuses its signature adoption program on older children, sibling groups and children with special needs. Be sure to watch the video, “When I first met my child,” to see more stories of families who adopted older children.

Cream School in Camden Re-opens With New School Supplies From Subaru of America

DESCRIPTION:

CAMDEN, N.J., January 18, 2018 /3BL Media/ – When the Riletta Twyne Cream Family School suffered major water damage following a burst pipe during this month’s record-breaking cold front, the school’s teachers worried about two things: their students’ education, and how they would stock up on new school supplies in time to re-open their classrooms.

After a week’s absence, the school re-opened yesterday, January 17th, occupying a new building in an unused school on the other side of Camden. Staff used to fully equipped classrooms are making do with just the basics, and were excited to receive ready-made classroom supply kits courtesy of Subaru of America, which is moving its U.S. headquarters to Camden this year.

Subaru provided all 25 Cream school classrooms with a classroom supply starter kit, consisting of:

  • 200 pre-sharpened pencils
  • 6 packs of loose leaf lined writing paper
  • a classroom set of crayons (25 packs)
  • a set of dry erase markers and eraser
  • sharpies
  • Post-it® Notes

Moving an entire K-8 elementary and middle school into a new building in less than five days is no easy feat, but Cream School’s staff were up for the challenge.

“No matter the circumstances, as educators we do what it takes to give our students a great learning environment,” said Principal Herbert Simons. “Facing challenges with positivity and determination is a great way to teach our students to be resilient and persistent. We are incredibly grateful to Subaru of America for being such a good neighbor and helping our teachers return to normalcy after such an unexpected mid-year move.”

“Subaru works closely with Camden schools as part of our Subaru Camden Works and Subaru Loves Learning initiatives,” added Sandy Capell, corporate responsibility and philanthropy manager, Subaru of America. “As soon as we heard about how these hardworking teachers’ classrooms were impacted by the flooding, we knew we had to help. We wish Cream School teachers, staff and students a great second half of the school year in their new home.”

Photos of Subaru staff delivering boxes of school supplies to Cream teachers and students are available here.

NOTE TO EDITORS:
Riletta Twyne Cream Family School was closed for emergency repairs and cleanup following a burst pipe and resulting building damage on Monday, January 8. The burst pipe was a result of record-breaking low temperatures on January 6-7. Due to extensive building damage, the building will remain closed for the rest of the year, and the school has relocated. Cream North is now operating at 445 North 9th Street, Camden, NJ 08102. Students receive bussing to their new school location each morning, and all classes remain together. Cream’s new school building is just five-years old, and equipped with modern technology and learning facilities.

Follow the Money: How Sands Cares Assists Nevada Homeless Alliance

SOURCE:Las Vegas Sands

DESCRIPTION:

Through Sands Cares, Las Vegas Sands’ corporate giving program, the company is leading the way to bring positive change to the significant homelessness problem in Las Vegas.  Through various agencies and partners in the community, Las Vegas Sands believes in playing an active role to bring new solutions and resources to address the issue.  Las Vegas has the third largest unaccompanied youth homeless population, with more than 80% unsheltered, the highest rate in the nation and the sixth largest population of homeless individuals among major cities.

“Sands Cares is always at the table representing the business community,” Emily Paulsen, Executive Director of Nevada Homeless Alliance, said.  “Overall, the financial support that we receive from Sands Cares allows us to keep our existing programs and develop new ones.  They offer collaboration on projects like Project Homeless Connect and our weekly event, Pop-Up Homeless Connect.”

Nevada Homeless Alliance (NHA) is just one of the local organizations that Sands Cares provides resources to in the Las Vegas Valley in combating the homelessness problem.  NHA, established in 1992, has convened community partners and social service providers in the planning and execution of several events where homeless clients can get legal aid, housing assistance, health care, clothing, food and showers all in one place.  Now partnering with over 150 organization in Southern Nevada, NHA has helped over 15,000 clients in the last five years, serving clients directly with exactly what they need.

“Sands Cares helps to provide expertise, resources, public relations and a business mind,” she added.  “Corporate partnerships help us reach a larger community.  We think the help that Sands Cares has provided us has led other businesses to help and assist us to end homelessness in the community.”

With the establishment of the Sands Cares Fresh Start Mobile Showers Powered by Clean the World, NHA has established a new relationship with Clean the World.  Providing showers at their Pop-Up Connect events as well as Project Homeless Connect, an annual event that served over 2,700 homeless in 2017 with employment, housing, and health care assistance, bringing together government, private sector and other organizations has helped NHA achieve its goals.  Paulsen says overall community outcomes increase service collaboration with providers, increase mobilization, and increase public support.  Community leaders have the ability to influence policy response.  They inform, influence the policy and create a stronger response within the community.

“Money can’t solve it alone, the donation of time goes a long way” she said.  “The public must help, be aware and understand our homelessness issue.  I want the community to know that homelessness has many faces.  They can be seniors, veterans, youth and families.  Some people work full-time and are still homeless.  The majority are our neighbors who have worked and lived here for a long time.  They have had issues that have led to this experience.  This is a community issue and the community needs to be involved in the solution.”

SOURCE:The Wendy's Company

DESCRIPTION:

It’s difficult to quantify the number of lives that Dave Thomas touched throughout his 69 years of life. From our 6,500 restaurants who employ around 30 employees per restaurant per year, combined with the thousands of children in the foster care system who have been paired with a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Recruiter, plus all the restaurant support center employees, contractors, suppliers and agencies that serve to support the Wendy’s restaurants…the number must be in the billions and counting.

We’ve written a few times about Dave’s life and legacy – it’s a topic we know well and are quite proud to share, but we were particularly touched when Dennis Hardy, President & CEO of California-based marketing and communications agency EvansHardy+Young, reached out to us and asked for a photo of Mr. Thomas to use on his company blog post.

Dennis worked for Dave very early in his career and Dave left a long-lasting impression on Dennis. Dennis credits Dave for helping him succeed in the food industry, so he wrote a post in honor of his former boss.

As Dennis put it, “Dave believed that hard work, humility and personal accountability were the necessary requisites to achieve outstanding results.”

We hope you enjoy the rest of Dennis’ blog post as much as we do.

How the World Food Program provides life-saving food assistance and a pathway to self-sufficiency

SOURCE:UPS

DESCRIPTION:

When Jeremias Ngwenya opened his eyes one morning last March in Mozambique, he remembers exactly how he felt.

He rested upon a soft, white mattress with a faded blue flower print, just underneath a teal-colored mosquito net. Small rays of sun burst through the uneven spaces in the walls of tethered reeds surrounding him.

“When I woke up, I had a lot of will,” he said. “I didn’t sleep yesterday. I hadn’t eaten anything. I had will to thank God. I had a desire to go get the food.”

For the Ngwenya family, today was their final food distribution day from the World Food Program (WFP).

Because of a historic drought in 2016, their plot of rain-fed farmland, managed by his wife Anastacia, had little to offer their two young children Josue and Isabel. Jeremias would sometimes buy a small additional amount of food with his earnings as a cobbler, repairing shoes for a few customers a week.

Now, the potential promise of new plantings of corn and beans was still one month away from being ready to harvest.

With the help of WFP, Jeremias and the small-scale farmers who call the rural community of Macunene home averted catastrophe. They received life-saving food assistance and learned new skills to become more self-reliant. They took steps to build their resilience to climate change, planting drought-resistant seeds, adopting new irrigation techniques and accessing new markets to sell more of what they grow. Many were now looking forward to the future.

Later that morning, Jeremias and Anastacia walked to a large, green savannah about 45 minutes from their home. It was WFP’s main food distribution point, a central location where families in Macunene had come to receive their monthly food ration during the crisis. The distribution was planned to start between 10 and 11 a.m.

Slowly, more families started to trickle through the trees surrounding the open field. Early arrivals found refuge under the little shade in the area, while others took out umbrellas to protect themselves from the searing sun. The grass fields hummed with the chatter of anticipation.

But then word came. There was a problem.

Whatever it takes

Less than a quarter mile away from the food distribution point, as dozens of families waited patiently, a WFP food truck was desperately revving its engine.

Its bed, filled with 100-pound bags of corn and beans as well as smaller boxes of vegetable oil, had met its match: a deeply set caked mud, trapping the truck’s spinning wheels like quicksand. It was a vestige of Macunene’s floods, now scorched by the sun.

Almost 20 men positioned themselves around it, pushing and crying out as the driver inside put the pedal to the metal, smoke billowing from down below. Small sticks and branches were placed under the wheels to give it traction. But with every try, each lasting 20-30 seconds, the truck veered ever so slightly forward before rocking back to its original position.

This was everyday life on the “last mile,” food drop-offs at distribution points distant from reliable public infrastructure. The drought – the culmination of three years of limited-to-no rainfall – put lives at risk because so many rural families depended on rain-fed agriculture to survive.

In a cruel twist, the unexpected return of rain months later only intensified their plight, bringing intense flooding that washed away once dry, barren fields. In some areas, it cut off access to communities in need, making subsequent food deliveries even more important.

Now families in Macunene once again relied on WFP’s ability to circumvent these weather-related obstacles. In the end, unable to unstick the truck from the mud, WFP staff unloaded some of the bags of food from the truck bed into a smaller cargo truck. Two additional trucks followed, bypassing the mud and successfully arriving to the main distribution point.

Two hours behind schedule, the food finally arrived.

Last exit

During the next few hours, each family received their final food distribution, including bags of corn, a portion of beans and vegetable oil. The food would help tide many over until next month’s harvest.

For Jeremias and Anastacia, it would not only help them feed their children. It would give them the sustenance they would need to wake up with purpose every day.

For Joana Tiago Macuácua, a social worker with one of WFP’s local partners in the field, the National Institute for Social Affairs, she knows how critical this food assistance has been for the most vulnerable in Macunene, including the elderly and others with chronic degenerative illnesses.

“Without this food, it would have been a great tragedy,” she said. “It was one of the most important types of assistance for this community. [During the drought], they didn’t have anything to their name. And what food did exist in stores was expensive.”

Back at their house, Jeremias and Anastacia carried their bags of corn into their home, covered by a corrugated tin roof. They placed the food beside their jugs of water, just under a rope with hanging clothes. It would be all they would have until next month, when he and Anastacia planned to harvest their plot of land.

Twenty five years ago, renowned writer Mia Couto wrote about the weather of Mozambique, his homeland. Today, his words echo, as a more extreme cycle of drought, floods and cyclones has put his people on the front lines of hunger.

At noon, the rain stops.
The sun is right overhead, and so vengeful that in an instant it sucks up the excess water from the savannah.
The earth imbibes the flood, squeezing the smallest puddle dry.
As the scene changes so unbelievably, the drought once again prevails.
Where water had held sway but a few hours previously, dust now pervades the air.
One can hear time scraping its bones against the stones.

For now, the rain had stopped. The sun remained overhead, and the floods had long gone. Would a drought once again prevail? Only time would tell, but Jeremias and Anastacia hope they will be ready for the next one.

“I hope we have food next time for my family,” said Anastacia. “I pray that in the future they can find a job and improve their lives.”

It is this same hope – a desire to be self-sufficient, to no longer need food assistance from WFP to survive – that fuels Jeremias.

To know his family has what it needs to not just survive, but thrive.

Ray C. Anderson Foundation Commits Additional $2 Million to The Ray

$

SOURCE:Ray C. Anderson Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

ATLANTA, January 23, 2018 /3BL Media/ - The Trustees of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation have granted an additional $2 million to The Ray over the next two years, to fund important research, pilot projects and emerging technologies with the potential to shape the transportation infrastructure of the future.

The Ray C. Anderson Foundation is a private family foundation that honors and shares the values that Ray C. Anderson (1934-2011), Founder and Chairman of Interface Inc., set forth when he put his company on a path to sustainability in 1994.

The Ray was one of the Foundation’s first key funding initiatives, beginning with the 2014 naming of an 18-mile corridor on Interstate-85 in West Georgia as the “Ray C. Anderson Memorial Highway.” In the year that followed, the Foundation created The Ray as an independent nonprofit, empowering it to catalyze the corridor into a global model for regenerative transportation.  Between 2015 and 2017, the Foundation granted approximately $2.5 million in funding to pursue this work.

“The Ray began with a single idea from Harriet Langford, Ray’s daughter and Trustee of our Foundation,” says John A. Lanier, Executive Director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation. “Just as her father did with Interface, Harriet asked, ‘What if we made this sustainable?’ That question was a seed that has grown into so much more, and we are proud to be the lead funders of such a remarkable project.”

“I think of The Ray as an epiphany of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation,” said Harriet Langford, President of The Ray. “It has given me the opportunity to carry on my father's work. We're not putting solar panels on the side of the road and calling it green; we're fundamentally changing our assumptions and expectations of highway infrastructure. Roads can be safe, sustainable, and regenerative. We're proving that and the world is starting to notice.”

The Ray has become a proving ground for the evolving ideas and technologies that will transform transportation infrastructure.  Current pilots and demonstrations on The Ray include:
  • Solar electric vehicle quick charger - eliminating range anxiety for EV drivers between Atlanta and Montgomery, AL.

  • 7,000 square foot pollinator garden at the Georgia Visitor Information Center as well as on the highway shoulder in conjunction with Troup County High School.

  • Installation of the Wattway, the first publicly available, drivable solar road in the world outside of France.

A Record $84 Million Raised for Charities Through eBay in 2017

With nearly $810 million dollars raised to date, 2018 is off to a dynamic start with TIME’S UP and GRAMMY charity auctions.

SOURCE:eBay

DESCRIPTION:

eBay has announced that together with its global community, it raised $84 million for charities in 2017, bringing the total funds raised to nearly $810 million since 2003.

“With $84 million through eBay for Charity in 2017, we are demonstrating our commitment to supporting the thousands of charities who use our platform to connect and raise funds every day,” said Brenda Halkias, General Manager of eBay for Charity. “This year, we will continue to focus on leveraging our platform for good and delivering new experiences on behalf of the eBay community. Together with our eBay buyers and sellers, we aim to raise $1 billion for charities by 2020."

Through eBay for Charity, we enable millions of people to come together and make an impact. The program allows charities to sell items and raise funds with discounted fees, and consumers are able to buy and sell to benefit charities or just give at checkout. Businesses can also support their favorite organizations by donating a percentage of the proceeds from their sales. In 2017 alone, on average, $160 was raised every minute.

In 2017, high profile auctions of one-of-a-kind experiences and items brought in large charitable donations. The annual Power Lunch with Warren Buffett raised almost $2.7 million for GLIDE, a San Francisco-based charity that has a mission of breaking the cycles of poverty and marginalization; while an exclusive sculpture and print created by artist Ai Weiwei raised nearly $800,000 for the Public Art Fund, which helps bring contemporary art to New York City; and Ryan Adams’ acoustic guitar with signed original lyrics resulted in over $63,000 to the ACLU, which works to defend and preserve individual rights and liberties.

In addition to partnerships with some of the biggest and well-known celebrities and charities, the true power of eBay’s charitable platform lies in everyday donations from people around the world rallying behind important causes. In the wake of recent natural disasters and as a humanitarian response, the eBay community donated over $700,000 directly to related charities in 2017.

Looking ahead to 2018, eBay for Charity will launch a variety of high profile campaigns in partnership with some of the biggest stars and brands to help raise funds for significant causes. From equality to women’s rights to environmental sustainability to animal welfare, eBay for Charity is working to help connect the community to the causes they care most about. In January, eBay for Charity partnered with TIME’S UP and Condé Nast to auction off the black dresses and tuxedos worn by the attendees of the historic 75th Annual Golden Globe® Awards, benefiting the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund. In February, eBay for Charity will celebrate the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards by raising funds with GRAMMY artists and nominees with the platform’s longtime partners, the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares.

SUMMARY:

Posted with permission from the United Way of Monroe County.

DESCRIPTION:

At a United Way of Monroe County community meeting held at Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus in Tannersville, corporate partners, community leaders, and students and staff from some of Monroe County’s local schools announced the results of their respective United Way campaigns to a packed room of volunteers and supporters. Among those presenting their results, Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, announced the total dollars raised by employees and the company through their annual campaign, a signature local Corporate Social Responsibility Program for
Sanofi Pasteur.

Every year, community members, non-profits, government offices and employees from local corporations unite to raise funds to support community services in Monroe County. Through partnership with the United Way of Monroe County, individuals can set up payroll deductions so that they can set aside a small amount every pay period. When these donations are combined with thousands of others from across the community, United Way and its partners can make a meaningful positive impact in Monroe County. Last year, through the generous support of the community, over 35,000 people were helped in Monroe County through United Way and its partner programs.

Strong workplace campaigns announced at the event included Weiler Abrasives Group and Pocono Mountain School District. The largest workplace campaign came from Sanofi Pasteur, who reported a campaign total of $251,525. This included employee donations to the United Way and its partner agencies, as well as a company match from both Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America. This support from Sanofi Pasteur, whose U.S. headquarters are in Swiftwater, Pa., is United Way of Monroe County’s largest single contributor.

As part of their internal campaign, the Sanofi Pasteur campaign leadership team continued with its “Be the Change” tagline. As a part of Sanofi Pasteur’s annual kick-off event, a team approach to fundraising was highlighted, where employees were encouraged to wear jeans and shirts from their favorite sports teams. The campaign’s financial total is a direct result of collaboration and commitment from its employees, from Sanofi Pasteur and the Sanofi Foundation for North America.

TOGETHER. MORE THAN EVER.

Key volunteers for Sanofi Pasteur’s campaign included:

  • Frank Epifano, vice president, North America & Global Finance Commercial Operations, and Sanofi Pasteur’s United Way executive lead;
  • Ellyn Schindler, director, North America Corporate Social Responsibility, and company campaign coach and board member of the United Way of Monroe County;
  • Pam Reincke, manager, Marketing & Sales Incentive Compensation, and campaign chair;
  • Jennifer Kinsley, deputy director, Clinical Program Management & Business Support, and campaign vice chair;
  • Stephanie Posse, deputy director, Reliability Engineering, and campaign vice chai
  • Kathy Schwartz, deputy director, Customer Experience, and campaign vice chair; and
  • Grace Tobin, deputy director, Public Health Marketing, and campaign vice chair.

“This is my favorite meeting of the year”, said President and CEO of United Way of Monroe County, Michael Albert. “Getting to hear from some of the children and members of the business community who have worked hard to give back to those struggling to make ends meet, make everything we do worthwhile.”

A complete list of supporters for the United Way of Monroe County along with the dollars raised and how they are invested back into the community will be available on the United Way website at the end of the  campaign in March of 2018.

DESCRIPTION:

For Josh Kaplan, giving back to the community is part of who he is. Driven by the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, or “repairing the world,” he believes each of us has the power to create change and participate meaningfully in the world around us.

An avid soccer player, Josh turned his passion into action when he launched GOALS (Giving Opportunities to All who Love Soccer) in his hometown of Phoenix. The program partners young athletes who have intellectual disabilities with neurotypical peer buddies, who then play as unified pairs in small-sided, non-competitive games twice each month. Inspired by a teammate’s brother, whose Down syndrome prevented him from joining a soccer team, Josh created GOALS to help break down barriers, build friendships and foster genuine acceptance through the team sport.

Now a freshman at Emory University, Josh continues to lead GOALS and is actively involved in the Atlanta community. He currently serves on the Special Olympics Arizona Youth Activation Committee and as an ambassador for Youth Service America and Special Olympics International.

We spoke with Josh to learn about what drives his passion for service, his dreams for GOALS and why he thinks everyone should get involved in their community.

Expanded TransCanada Scholarship Program Helps Remove Barriers to Education

TransCanada is expanding its successful community scholarships program, that will further help hundreds of North Americans gain skills to realize their goals and prosper in the workforce.

SOURCE:TransCanada

DESCRIPTION:

CALGARY, Canada, January 24, 2018 /3BL Media/ - Media Advisory - TransCanada Corporation (TSX:TRP) (NYSE:TRP) (TransCanada) today announced it is expanding its successful community scholarships program, that will further help hundreds of North Americans gain skills to realize their goals and prosper in the workforce.

Buoyed by the success of last year's launch of the program, which saw close to 300 scholarships awarded in Canada and the U.S., the program has expanded its reach to include students in Mexico, where a new TransCanada Women's Scholarship is intended to help women continue their academic studies so they can improve their economic situation.

Overall, it is expected some $600,000 will be offered through the program this year with more than 350 scholarships available in the following categories:

  • TransCanada Community Leaders Scholarship (Canada, U.S., Mexico)
  • TransCanada Indigenous Legacy Scholarship (Canada, U.S., Mexico)
  • TransCanada Trades Scholarship (Canada and U.S.)
  • TransCanada Women's Scholarship (Mexico)

"Removing barriers to education helps clear the way for people to pursue their passions, support their families and better their communities," said Kristine Delkus, TransCanada's Executive Vice-President, Stakeholder and Technical Services and General Counsel.

"TransCanada has the privilege of living, working and operating in hundreds of communities across the continent and we believe that helping students succeed is the most powerful way we can help our communities flourish."

TransCanada has made its Community Scholarships available to students across a wide range of academic performance levels and post-secondary programs. The program is administered entirely by TransCanada and is unique in that the qualification criteria focuses on demonstration of leadership skills and community involvement, not solely on academic performance.

Applications open on January 18 and close April 15, 2018 at 11:59:59 EST. To learn more about the scholarships and the qualification criteria, and meet some of last year's recipients, students are encouraged to visit TCScholarships.com.

The TransCanada Community Scholarships are part of the company's North American-wide community investment program, which invested more than $16 million in more than 1,200 non-profit organizations and community enhancement projects across North America last year.

With more than 65 years' experience, TransCanada is a leader in the responsible development and reliable operation of North American energy infrastructure including natural gas and liquids pipelines, power generation and gas storage facilities. TransCanada operates one of the largest natural gas transmission networks that extends more than 91,500 kilometres (56,900 miles), tapping into virtually all major gas supply basins in North America. TransCanada is the continent's leading provider of gas storage and related services with 653 billion cubic feet of storage capacity. A large independent power producer, TransCanada currently owns or has interests in approximately 6,100 megawatts of power generation in Canada and the United States. TransCanada is also the developer and operator of one of North America's leading liquids pipeline systems that extends approximately 4,800 kilometres (3,000 miles), connecting growing continental oil supplies to key markets and refineries. TransCanada's common shares trade on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges under the symbol TRP. Visit TransCanada.com to learn more, or connect with us on social media and 3BL Media.
