DESCRIPTION:

Last year, JetBlue launched an online #BookBattle competition as part of its award-winning Soar with Reading program. The airline asked crewmembers and the public which community -- Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles or New York City -- should get 100,000 new children's books from JetBlue in 2016. Nearly 1.3 million online votes were cast and Detroit triumphed with 48 percent of the vote.

Last week, at a Soar with Reading event in Detroit, basketball superstar Andre Drummon surprised some of his smallest fans with free books and treated them to a story. Andre commended JetBlue for providing age-appropriate reading material for children in underserved communities. This summer JetBlue is dispensing free books via five vendign machines in Detroit. So fare more than 45,000 books have been provided to kids around Detroit, and there's still plenty of time left to help JetBlue pick which of four JetBlue cities --Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Long Beach or New York -- should win books in 2017.

ST. Louis, Aug 29, 2016 /3BL Media/ - Petfinder, the nation’s leading resource for pet adoption, celebrates a major milestone this year – its 20th anniversary. More than 25 million pets and millions of pet parents can claim that they #MetOnPetfinder since the organization was established in 1996 – that’s an average of 1.2 million pets per year that have found their forever homes via Petfinder.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Petfinder is asking people across the country to join the celebration and its effort to donate $200,000 to the Petfinder Foundation, who will award grants to 20 shelter and rescue members. To make this donation possible, Petfinder is asking animal lovers to watch and generate one million views by Oct. 24 of its #MetOnPetfinder anniversary video, which shows how adoptable pets have transformed the lives of their adopters.

When the video has been viewed one million times, 20 selected Petfinder shelter members will each receive a $10,000 grant from the Petfinder Foundation to help continue to transform the lives of the pets in their care. As part of the celebration, Petfinder families, advocates, members and fans are also encouraged to share their Petfinder adoption stories on social media by using the hashtag #MetOnPetfinder.

Celebrity animal adoption advocates Jamie Chung and Tony La Russa have partnered with Petfinder to emphasize the importance of considering adoption first, and to encourage animal lovers nationwide to watch the #MetOnPetfinder video to help 20 animal welfare organizations receive impactful funding.

“I’m proud to team up with Petfinder and celebrate the lifelong happiness they’ve created for millions of families and the pets they’ve adopted,” said award-winning actress Jamie Chung, who has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows. “I hope that more people consider adopting when adding a pet to their family. My dog, Ewok, is adopted and he’s been the best addition to my family.”

Over the past 20 years, Petfinder has harnessed the power of the internet to help facilitate more than 25 million pet adoptions through its extensive network of more than 13,000 shelter and rescue organizations. At any given time, there are more than 250,000 adoptable pets featured on Petfinder.

“My family and I have adopted and fostered more pets through the years than I can count. I strongly support Petfinder’s goal to find forever homes for adoptable pets and to encourage more people to consider pet adoption,” said Tony La Russa, Major League Baseball Hall of Fame manager and co-founder of the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) in Walnut Creek, CA. “By simply watching the #MetOnPetfinder celebration video, you can help Petfinder continue to support shelters and rescues that care for adoptable pets around the country.”

Petfinder was founded in 1996 by Betsy Banks Saul and Jared Saul, who started a website to help save lives of adoptable pets by connecting people to various animal shelters across New Jersey.

21st Century Fox Celebrates 'Pitch' by Partnering with Women's Sports Foundation to Expand Girls' Access to Sports

SOURCE:21st Century Fox

DESCRIPTION:

Ginny Baker, the fictional first female player in major league baseball, will make her way to television this fall on FOX's newest drama Pitch, and to celebrate her inspirational story, 21st Century Fox has announced a new partnership with the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) to help break barriers for girls in their own communities and take their athletic achievements to new heights.

The partnership will support WSF's leading efforts to champion women in sports. Founded by sports icon Billie Jean King in 1974, the organization conducts research to further understand the physical and emotional benefits for girls who participate in athletics, and works directly with leagues, schools, and nonprofits on the local level that are trying to get and keep girls in the game.

Specifically, 21CF's contributions will support WSF's scholarship and grant programs, which allow female athletes across a range of skill levels to pursue the sport they love. Its Sports 4 Life initiative, for example, awards grants to schools, parks and recreation departments, nonprofits, or amateur sports leagues that encourage the participation and retention of African-American and Hispanic girls ages 11-18 in developmental sports programs.Recent recipients include Atlanta's Soccer in the Streets program, providing soccer programs for Hispanic young women, and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), which provides after-school programming for LA youth in academics, arts, and athletics.

WSF also supports schools and grassroots organizations through its GoGirlGo! program, an award winning curriculum and sports education program. In addition, its Travel & Training Fund gives aspiring female champions the financial support they need to dedicate themselves to athletic competitions around the world. WSF also awards sport-specific grants to female athletes in judo, auto racing, and more.

As part of 21CF's support of the foundation, the company is screening a highlight reel of WSF's work at each "Pitch Night at the Ballpark" event. The campaign offers baseball fans a chance to attend an advance screening of the Pitch pilot episode at 55 baseball venues across the country following a regular season game. After the game concludes, attendees are welcomed onto the field for family activities such as Kids Run the Bases and player meet-and-greets. Along with the pilot, the venue highlights the vital work the foundation is doing to expand opportunities for young women and girls through this video:

FOX Sports, a division of 21st Century Fox, has supported the Women's Sports Foundation since 2014, partnering with other sports networks to contribute a collective $2 million to the foundation's work. FOX Sports also supports WSF's Annual Salute to Women in Sports, a gala recognizing the world's top female athletes.

Subaru's Environment Activities Exceed The Norm

DESCRIPTION:

It’s rare to find an automaker or other brand that doesn’t have a pet project, charity or cause they donate to and maybe give some lip service. But in Subaru of America’s case, their commitment to environmental causes is authentically deep.

Reducing waste through recycling and reusing is a passion of mine. So when the automaker pitched me a story about a study they conducted with the National Park Service, I was intrigued.

The park service manages an astounding 100 million pounds of waste nationally —  enough trash to fill the Statue of Liberty 1,800 times — much of which is sent to landfills, posing a significant threat to both the future of the parks and to the environment.

The waste characterization study was conducted in three pilot parks (Yosemite, Grand Teton and Denali) to examine sources of waste and identify ways to reduce waste, while also conducting a national survey to explore attitudes and behaviors of park visitors.

While the consumer survey found that 59% were unaware of the significant waste management challenge, 84% of respondents would be willing to make a significant effort to reduce the amount of trash left in parks.

Taking Sustainability From the Home Kitchen to the Cambodian Slums

Jean Gong, Senior Manager – Internal Communications and Administration for Kohler Co.’s Asia Pacific region helps to oversee Kohler Co.’s donation of squat toilets to the Habitat for Humanity homes.

SOURCE:Kohler Co.

DESCRIPTION:

Cambodia is home to 13 million people, 46 percent of whom live in poverty with 100,000 living in slums.

Jean Gong, Senior Manager – Internal Communications and Administration for Kohler Co.’s Asia Pacific region helps to oversee Kohler Co.’s donation of squat toilets to the Habitat for Humanity homes. This simple gesture makes a great impact in an area where 54 percent of the population is practicing open defecation.

“Cambodia residents have seen such turmoil,” Jean said. “But they are so committed to bettering themselves. We’re working with the sons and daughters of the generation who lived through the Cambodian Civil War. I see the bright future possible for this group of young people who are committed to getting an education and creating a better life for themselves and future generations. We want to do whatever we can to support them.”

The Habitat for Humanity homes give residents a fresh start and a chance to get out of the slums. Now one of Kohler Co.’s Global Sustainability Champions, Jean became serious about stewardship and sustainability seven years ago.

“When I learned that we would need three more planet Earths to sustain our current way of life,” Jean said, “that’s when I knew I had to do my part to bring about change.”

Jean carpools to get to her office in Shanghai, China, and uses public transportation or her bicycle as often as she can. She sorts waste at her home and uses grey water, water used for washing vegetables, fruits, etc. to water her flowers and clean her floors.

“I follow the philosophy of reduce, reuse and recycle in my daily life,” Jean remarked. “Because sustainability plays such a big role in my personal life, it’s important for me to bring sustainability to my work.”

Jean is responsible for fostering sustainability and stewardship in the company’s China headquarters. Her main role as manager of employee communication helps her understand the best ways to get employees involved in sustainable practices and stewardship projects.

“I not only manage Kohler China’s stewardship projects and volunteer programs internally but I work with external organizations on Kohler strategies,” Jean said.

In addition to the working on the partnership with Habitat for Humanity and several other initiatives, Jean helps with the Kohler Forest Project, which the company launched in 2010 in conjunction with the China Youth Development Foundation.

SOURCE:Republic Services

DESCRIPTION:

PHOENIX, August 30, 2016 /3BL Media/ Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) released its latest Sustainability Report for the 2015 Fiscal Year. The Report depicts the Company’s efforts to further improve its environmental and social impacts through decreased vehicle emissions, innovative landfill technologies, use of renewable energy, community engagement, and employee growth opportunities. The 2015 Sustainability Report demonstrates continued progress toward Republic’s four sustainability goals, and represents its latest achievements as part of its Blue Planet™ sustainability initiative.

“We are incorporating sustainable practices and programs into every facet of what we do, and this year’s report shows continued, strong momentum,” said Don Slager, president and chief executive officer of Republic Services. “We are also building durability into each element of our sustainability platform, which helps to ensure the viability of our initiatives while enabling our customers to be more resourceful.”

Republic’s sustainability platform encompasses five elements: Operations, Materials Management, Communities, Safety, and People. Highlights include:

  • Operations: Republic operates a fleet of nearly 2,500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, which represents approximately 16 percent of its entire vocational fleet. According the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the benefits of Republic’s CNG-powered fleet are equal to planting approximately 10.7 million trees annually.
  • Materials Management: Republic is taking a leadership role with customers, municipalities and governments to address the market dynamics affecting the nation’s recycling model, while increasing recycling capabilities in several markets across the country. According to the EPA, Republic saves 15 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents through its recycling operations, which is nearly equal to the Company’s entire carbon footprint.
  • Communities: The Company believes serving its 14 million customers goes beyond handling day-to-day recycling and waste needs. At Republic, service is about being a Good Neighbor to the communities where employees live, work and raise their families. In the last year, Republic donated over $5 million in cash and more than $6 million in community sponsorships, as well as countless volunteer hours to non-profit organizations across the country.
  • Safety: Ensuring that employees return home safely at the end of each day is a top priority at Republic. In 2015, Republic continued to achieve a 42 percent better safety record than the industry average, based upon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) data.
  • People: Republic cannot thrive without great people, which is why the Company is focused on attracting individuals across professions who are truly committed to serving customers and protecting the Blue Planet. Republic has earned a score of 80 out of 100 on the Corporate Equality Index, and was listed as one of the 30 Most Meaningful Companies to Work For in America by Business Insider.

Republic is committed to achieving the following four sustainability goals by 2018:

  1. Commodities: Adding an additional 150,000 tons per year or more of recycling capability;
  2. Energy: Developing at least 2 landfill gas-to-energy projects per year;
  3. Fleet: Reducing fleet emissions from direct operational impacts by 3 percent; and
  4. Safety: Reducing OSHA recordable rates by 7 percent year-over-year.

Also in 2015, Republic was among the top companies recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a leading international non-profit organization dedicated to measuring and disclosing environmental information, in the 2015 CDP S&P 500 Climate Change Report. Republic earned a Disclosure score of 98 out of 100, which reflects its strong commitment to transparency, quality and completeness, and an A- in Performance. Achieving an A is the highest Performance score possible.

Proud to Be a Girl Who Codes

By Brienna Carter, 2016 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program participant

SOURCE:AT&T

DESCRIPTION:

Coding is something I’ve wanted to do, since I was a kid obsessed with computers. Earlier this year, I applied for Girls Who Code’s Summer Immersion Program in New York. I promised myself to spend the summer learning programming languages, so my acceptance to the Girls Who Code program at AT&T was beyond exciting.

I had high expectations coming in – and the program surpassed all of them.

Over the past 5 weeks, my classmates and I covered everything. We learned programming languages, like Python and C++,  markup languages for web development, like HTML and CSS, and more. The day began with an issue—things like overcoming the gender gap in technology or how to handle a robot takeover—and writing down our thoughts in a journal. Then, it was on to lectures. At the end of the day, we had a chance to apply our newly-minted skills to projects like interactive games and dancing robots.

We also got to go on amazing field trips.

Two of them stand out for me. The first was our visit to Chanel’s corporate headquarters. My classmates and I got to see exclusive designs months before their release and hear from female executives.

The trip to the AT&T Global Network Operations Center (GNOC) was just as incredible, but in a different way.

Their impressive facility includes a colossal wall with more than 100 screens on it. They showed stats about practically everything related to the network, like the number of texts sent that day, weather reports and international news.

Perhaps the coolest part of the experience was when our guide displayed stats from certain events. He showed a decrease in calls on Christmas Day, but an increase in time spent on those calls. It brought the traffic moving across the network to life.

We also saw how cell phone use spikes after an earthquake in a pattern identical to tremor waves. And learned how AT&T gathers data on the average amount of calls, texts and web usage to detect cyberattacks.

Before joining Girls Who Code, I liked computers and enjoyed developing websites. Now, I understand computers and love to code everything—whether a website or a program. But it didn’t stop with technological advances for me.

I’ve also learned life skills. I now think to approach a problem from different perspectives to find a solution, and remember keep patient when faced with a challenge. Being a good coder is not only knowing the correct syntax, it’s about being a problem solver.

The experience even influenced my decision to major in computer science in college.

It goes beyond enjoying the subject this summer. Because of the many guest speakers who told me I can do anything with a computer science degree, I’m looking forward to a bright future.

Thanks to Girls Who Code and AT&T, I’ve learned so much. But most of all, I have 18 more friends whom I never would have met without the program.  Now, I’m ready to start my own journey in technology and make a difference in the world.

As part of AT&T Aspire, AT&T has collaborated with Girls Who Code since 2014. Most recently, AT&T contributed $2 million to Girls Who Code to support the expansion of the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program and Clubs Program, and the launch of the Girls Who Code Alumni Network, which will help ensure that young female graduates of Girls Who Code programs have clear pathways to careers in the computing field. This summer AT&T is hosting Summer Immersion Programs in six cities across the country, including New York.

This blog was orginally posted on AT&T's Innovation Space Blog.

Resilience—What Does This Buzzword Really Mean?

DESCRIPTION:

Over the past few years, resilience has emerged as a buzzword in the global development sector. The United Nations defines it as the ability to withstand unexpected events and quickly recover, while the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) initiative looks at both the unanticipated shocks and the continuous stresses that weaken cities. Meanwhile, the government of India sees resilience as a key component of its Smart Cities Challenge, which aims to “[help] cities get smarter, faster.” What, then, does resilience mean in the context of the world’s developing economies?

August 31, 2016 /3BL Media/ - Bloomberg Philanthropies and Harvard University are jointly announcing the launch of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, an unparalleled collaboration to advance leadership, management and innovation in cities across America and around the world. Funded by a $32 million gift from Michael R. Bloomberg and administered through Harvard, the Initiative will equip city leaders with the tools, skills and support increasingly required to tackle the complex leadership and management challenges faced in governing cities around the globe.

Within the next four years, as many as 300 mayors and 400 top mayoral aides will participate in the Initiative’s executive training programs. This ambitious effort will generate the world’s largest hub of new and customized curriculum, instructional and technology tools – most of which will be made freely available to the world – and cases focused on innovative city leadership. The Initiative will also create student internships in mayors’ offices, on-demand programming for participating cities, significant new research on innovative city government, and an executive coaching program through which successful mayors mentor newcomers. Each year, a select number of mayors and key aides will be invited to New York to participate in interactive convenings.

Wendy’s Franchise Owner Keeps His Foot on the Pedal for Children in Foster Care

DESCRIPTION:

It’s the home to a distinct type of barbeque and this city straddles a state line. Today Ed Anderson’s Tour de Adoption takes us to Kansas City. He’s trying to raise $1 million to help find forever families for children in foster care. And dollar by dollar, he is doing it, but he still needs help!

Ed Anderson is a Wendy’s franchisee from Newport News, VA and he is riding 4,000 miles across the country to raise awareness and critical funds for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. So far, he’s $215,000 towards his goal and he isn’t finished yet.

In 1992, Dave Thomas started the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. An international nonprofit dedicated solely to increasing the number of adoptions from foster care. The Foundation furnishes grants to private and public adoption agencies through its signature program, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids. The agencies use the grants to hire specially-trained adoption recruiters, called Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters, who use a child-focused recruitment model. It is the sole mission of these recruiters to find permanent, loving homes for the children who have been in foster care the longest.

Dave Thomas himself was adopted and Ed felt there was no better way to honor the memory of Dave Thomas than to help raise funds for his Foundation.

Ed will be on his bike from now until October 4 when he completes his journey in San Diego, CA.

7 million trees planted in 52 countries around the world Foundation to award millions in environmental grants

SOURCE:UPS

DESCRIPTION:

ATLANTA, Ga., August 31, 2016 /3BL Media/ - The UPS Foundation, which leads the global citizenship programs for UPS (NYSE: UPS), announced it will award more than $2.6 million in grants to nonprofit organizations focused on environmental sustainability initiatives. This includes a significant grant to twenty-five year partner, The Nature Conservancy, a global organization that works to preserve ecologically important land and water resources through conservation. Other grants will support programs that advance environmental research and education, carbon reduction and energy conservation – all vital to economic growth and community stability.

The Nature Conservancy grant includes a partnership extension for UPS’s Global Forestry Initiative, a program designed to plant, protect and preserve trees in urban and rural areas and forests worldwide. The grant will enable The Nature Conservancy to continue reforestation efforts for at-risk or eroded ecosystems throughout the U.S., Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico and Tanzania.

“Our multi-faceted strategy is to support organizations that advance environmental sustainability in different but important ways which collectively help create thriving communities for future generations,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation and chief diversity and inclusion officer at UPS. “From planting trees to helping further the discussion on climate change in our industry, The UPS Foundation is committed to working with our preeminent partner organizations to create a more sustainable planet for everyone.”

Working with its partners, The UPS Foundation has planted more than 1.8 million trees in 2016 and more than 7 million trees since 2012. The UPS Foundation has a goal to fund the planting of 15 million trees by the end of 2020.

In addition to The Nature Conservancy, The UPS Foundation is awarding environmental grants to 10 other organizations:

  • DonorsChoose.org, backing environmental education classroom projects submitted by public school teachers in rural U.S. communities.
  • Earth Day Network, for the Trees for Communities project that will plant more than 500,000 trees in Mexico, India, Cameroon, Uganda and the Boreal Forest in Canada.
  • Earthwatch, in support of two education and research workshops as part of the organization’s 2017 Climate Ambassadors Program.
  • Keep America Beautiful, Inc., to fulfill local tree planting grants and beautification projects, advance community education and engage UPS employees through volunteerism.
  • National Arbor Day Foundation, for continued help with reforestation programs of Canada’s Boreal Forest, planting 50,000 trees.
  • National Park Foundation, to extend reforestation efforts in reclaimed mining land near the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Penn.
  • Student Conservation Association (SCA), for assistance with its National Conservation Internship Program for college students interested in environmental stewardship careers.
  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to support public private partnerships to enhance environmental sustainability.
  • World Resources Institute, to provide continued program support for The Greenhouse Gas Protocol and Principles for Sustainable Development of Renewable Natural Gas.
  • World Wildlife Fund, to build local capacity for tropical rainforest restoration and reforestation in Africa, Asia and Latin America through WWF's Education for Nature Reforestation Grants to non-governmental organizations, community groups and educational institutions.

Jason Motte: The Man Behind Baseball’s Strike Out Cancer Effort

Veteran reliever delivers pitch on behalf of children with cancer

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

Jason Motte provides relief both on and off the field.

As September begins Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, the 34-year-old right-hander will play an even bigger role than his usual place in the Colorado Rockies’ bullpen.

Because of his dogged determination, Friday, September 2 will be Strike Out Cancer Day in Major League ballparks, as Motte and 30 other supporting Major Leaguers will wear their K Cancer T-shirts to their games, in clubhouses and after games.  The players encourage fans to wear their K Cancer shirts that day to help create an even louder call to help strike out cancers of all types.

What started as an idea has turned into a movement.

While recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2013, Motte had numerous encounters with patients in the hospital. While he met many different people, it was the children with cancer that struck him the most.

There was one boy, Brandt Ballenger, with whom Motte grew especially close. “Hobo,” as Brandt would call Motte due to his burly beard, spent time with Brandt in the hospital, visiting a few times a week while he himself was rehabbing.  The hard-throwing reliever looked at his missed season as an opportunity to make a difference in Brandt’s life, and for the lives of children like Brandt.

“You can put your head down and say, ‘Poor me,’” Motte said to FOX. “But you start doing that, and no one really wants to be around you. I saw it as an opportunity. I thought, ‘I don’t know why this has happened. But it happened for a reason.’”

Fully aware that players use pink equipment and accessories on Mother’s Day to raise awareness for breast cancer and blue on Father’s Day to call attention to the prostate cancer cause, Motte was determined to create a platform in baseball for pediatric cancers of all type – thus the birth of Motte’s “Strike Out Cancer” movement.

Through his Jason Motte Foundation, Motte brought the cause to his fellow players and found tremendous support in clubhouses and with clubs across both leagues.

Teaming up with Major League Baseball Players Association apparel licensee 108 Stitches in 2014, Motte began selling “K Cancer” shirts, with a backwards K to designate striking out cancer.

But Motte didn’t want to stop there. With 108 Stitches on board and with the ongoing support of the MLBPA, , Motte enlisted players from all 30 teams to join his fight and help expand the reach of the “K Cancer” effort by selling their own tees.  To date, this effort has helped raise more than $450,000 to support charitable organizations across the country dedicated to wiping out, er, striking out, cancer.

The movement began with inspiration, and Motte’s unwavering desire to make a difference continues to gain momentum and is going strong three years later.

Top 5 Reasons to Run the New York City Marathon with Team LIVESTRONG

SOURCE:LIVESTRONG

DESCRIPTION:

On November 6 50,000+ runners will hit the streets of the five boroughs for the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon. Team LIVESTRONG will be taking to the streets of NYC in force. Here are five things they can look forward to as part of our team on 11/6:

1. You get to run for something bigger than yourself!
We all know running is hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it. However, one thing that makes it easier is finding a deeper meaning in your run. It can be hard to get out of bed for a training run early in the morning when you are not meeting someone else or thinking about larger goals. However, by joining Team LIVESTRONG, your training and your race day will all of a sudden mean so much more. You will be running for the 33 million people affected by cancer, as well as yourself. When that lactic acid kicks in during the race and you start to feel like slowing down, you can think about those who you are out there for and you will find that extra strength you didn’t think you had.

2. You are guaranteed a spot in one of the world’s most premiere marathons.
To run the New York City Marathon most people have to either enter into a lottery or meet one of the NYRR’s very specific qualifications. By joining Team LIVESTRONG, you will be able to bypass the usual standards for entry, removing the headache many other runners will face. We want anyone to have the opportunity to run this incredible race!

3. You will have a community in a sea of runners.
In a field of nearly 50,000 people, you will not be just a number. You can take comfort in running with and finding your Team LIVESTRONG teammates out on the course. Just look for our iconic yellow shirts!

4. You will see the city in a completely new way!
Whether you have been to New York City before or not, running through the five Boroughs is very different than taking a cab or Uber to get around—especially when you get to run across some of the country’s most famous bridges that are usually only for cars. This is not a boring race—that is for sure. Take it from P.Diddy who once famously said, “Never in my life have I experienced anything as crazy as this!”

5. You will get to set two goals and prove to yourself that you’re capable of both.
With Team LIVESTRONG you will be required to raise a certain amount of money to get your spot. So beyond setting a training/racing goal, you will have a fundraising goal. The feeling of meeting a fundraising challenge can be just as powerful as crossing a finish line. You will know that your hard work both in training and in fundraising paid off when you cross that finish line!

We can’t wait to see you all in the Big Apple on November 11! If you have questions or need guidance for fundraising, we are always here to help: teamlivestrong@livestrong.org.

Boston’s 2016 Cox Conserves Heroes Finalists

Adam Crellin-Sazama is creating a better future for the planet and inspiring his fellow teenagers to make a difference. He created a movement called Youth United for Animals and the Planet and advocates on the important role zoos play in animal conservation. While volunteering at the zoo, he cares for animals and educates visitors on conservation and climate change issues. His nonprofit of choice is Zoo New England.

Tom McNichol is an avid boater who saw a polluted river and took action to clean it up.  He created the Charles River Clean Up Boat, which has about 80 cleanups a year. More than 200 bags of trash are removed from the river annually. In addition to piloting the boat, he speaks to school groups, recruits volunteers and raises funds to cover the boat cleanup expenses. His nonprofit of choice is the Charles River Clean Up Boat.

Hilary Seager led the Bagnall School Open Space and Trails Project, which has introduced more than 500 youth to their community’s conservation areas. This hands-on service learning project has created bridges, boardwalks, picnic tables and trail signs. Students learn to appreciate nature and how they can make a difference, while the community has gained access to outdoor spaces. Her nonprofit of choice is the Bagnall Education Foundation.

The winner will be announced in mid Oct.

DESCRIPTION:

Over 50% of employees at the Villa Rica, Sanofi’s factory in Colombia, live in the nearby town, one of the areas most affected by the armed conflict in Colombia, with attendant social problems such as drugs, prostitution and crime.

In 2014, Sanofi identified 41 employees living in vulnerable conditions. That’s the reason why, in order to develop greater social interaction with the community, the factory has launched the program Generation of Healthy Families.

The first approach focuses on working with the children of the preteens’ school Simon Bolivar of Villa Rica. Videlicet we set up a prevention program for children affected by social problems in their community. The second approach focuses on working with our employees and their families to help improve job performance by improving quality of life.

This program is successful thanks to the different improvements and was rewarded at the internal Sanofi CSR Awards for the People award.
