PayPal Users Donated More than $48 Million on #GivingTuesday

SOURCE:PayPal

DESCRIPTION:

This year the #GivingTuesday movement turned five. Founded in 2012 by 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, this global day of giving has seen millions around the world unite to generously give their time and money to charitable causes. PayPal has been a lead supporter of the #GivingTuesday movement from the beginning, powering millions of donations on this day alone.

We are delighted to share that PayPal users donated more than $48 million globally on #GivingTuesday 2016, beating our previous GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® for the “most money raised online for charity in 24-hours” from last year. The increasing popularity of #GivingTuesday as a global movement and the official start of the holiday giving season is evident in the numbers - approximately 550,000 PayPal users donated, up from 512,000 in 2015. Thank you to everyone who donated with PayPal on this important day for charitable donations!

There’s also plenty of time to give back this season - here are some helpful tips for year-end giving and a few ways that PayPal can help:
  • Get more out of your donation. While giving this holiday season, look for options that match and extend your donation’s impact. At PayPal, we are adding an extra 1% to every donation made through the end of the year on paypal.com/givecheer to ensure 101% of your donation goes towards the cause of your choice.

  • Spread your giving out over the year. Even the smallest of donations can make a big difference for your favorite charity when given consistently over time.  Many organizations offer PayPal’s recurring donation option. Simply select the amount you want to give and the donation will be automatically withdrawn from your account each month.

  • Fundraise to make a bigger impact. You can extend your impact  by encouraging your network of friends, family and colleagues to give. Thanks to PayPal’s new partnership with GoFundMe, you can start a fundraising campaign on behalf of your favorite cause just in time for the holiday season.
Throughout the season PayPal is closely tracking online giving trends on our interactive holiday giving tracker so we invite you to check back on how people are giving around the world.

One of my favorite quotes on giving is by Kathy Calvin, President & CEO of the United Nations Foundation, who said: “Giving is not just about donations. It’s about making a difference.” I am so incredibly inspired by the outpouring of goodwill demonstrated by PayPal users on #GivingTuesday, and I hope we can keep the momentum building throughout the holiday season so that we can look back on 2016 as a year in which we made an incredible difference in the lives of people and communities around the world.

About Susan G. Komen® Lowcountry

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen® organization and the beginning of a global movement. What started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. The organization has invested more than $2.6 billion in ground breaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Their efforts helped reduce death rates from breast cancer by 37 percent between 1990-2013 and their objective is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% within the next decade.

Susan G. Komen is the only organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease.

SUMMARY:

Company will provide $75,000 to the Western North Carolina Firefighters Association and $25,000 to the South Carolina State Firefighters' Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

CHARLOTTE, N.C., December 5, 2016 /3BL Media/ -- The Duke Energy Foundation announced a donation of $100,000 toward response efforts to battle the devastating wildfires in western North Carolina and South Carolina.

"Firefighters have been working around the clock for weeks to save lives, protect homes and defend Duke Energy infrastructure from the flames," said Shawn Heath, president, Duke Energy Foundation. "These men and women are on the front lines protecting our communities. We are glad to make this contribution to aid their ongoing efforts."

In North Carolina, Duke Energy is donating $75,000 to the Western North Carolina Firefighters Association to help fire departments replace equipment and supplies depleted through wildfire response. A review committee will be created to determine the allocation of funds to fire departments in the region.

"On behalf of the Western North Carolina Association of Firefighters, we are honored and humbled by the donation provided to the association by Duke Energy," said Curt Deaton, president, Western North Carolina Firefighters Association. "The firefighters that serve the western part of our great state have had some long and sleepless days and nights due to the wildfires that have affected several counties in our district. Working side by side with emergency management and Duke Energy, our association is committed to assisting our membership with this donation."

In South Carolina, the company is donating $25,000 to the South Carolina State Firefighters' Foundation – a nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the South Carolina State Firefighters' Association – to help those fire agencies that have been responding to fires in South Carolina. They will also establish a committee to determine allocation of funds to help fire agencies replace equipment and supplies.

"The Duke Energy team reached out early to the agencies involved in fighting the fire on Pinnacle Mountain to ask, 'What can we do?'" said Phil Leventis, director of development of the South Carolina State Firefighters Foundation. "This kind of support from our community partners is always instrumental in helping the men and women dedicated to protecting our communities do their critically important jobs."

AT&T and Teach for America Expand Computer Science Opportunities to Serve 2,500 Students in Low-Income Communities

$900,000 Contribution from AT&T Provides Computer Science Programs to Teachers and Students in Seven Communities Nationwide

SOURCE:AT&T

DESCRIPTION:

NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2016 — Teach For America announced today that it will expand its Computer Science (CS) initiative, bringing high-quality opportunities to teachers and students in seven regions with support from AT&T. Through its signature philanthropic initiative, AT&T Aspire, the technology company will contribute $900,000 over the next two years to provide Udacity Nanodegree credential scholarships to help students learn the skills needed for entry-level jobs in the tech industry, and also to support  quality professional development and resources for teachers serving 2,500 students across the Bay Area, Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City, New York City, Rio Grande Valley, South Carolina, and Washington D.C.

As members of the national CS for All consortium, AT&T and Teach For America are committed to expanding access to CS education in low-income communities by connecting teachers and students to opportunities that develop career skills in technology.

This school year, in collaboration with Udacity, AT&T will award scholarships to up to 50 students of Teach For America teachers to complete Udacity’s “Intro to Programming” Nanodegree credential, which will provide students with foundational skills for a career in programming. AT&T’s support will also help connect Teach For America teachers to CS curriculum and professional development. Additionally, AT&T is continuing its support of the Exploring Computer Science program, which aims to increase the number of highly skilled CS educators and advocates in underserved communities specifically focused on encouraging participation of students of color and female students in CS.

"Our young people are our greatest strength and will set the course for our future. By working with Teach For America we are able to provide critical opportunities in computer science that will help ignite their potential and set them on a track to succeed in 21st century careers,” said Nicole Anderson, assistant vice president of Social Innovation at AT&T.

With the support of AT&T and the National Science Foundation, Teach For America formally launched its CS initiative in 2015 to increase access to high-quality CS education and experiences in underserved communities.

“As we move further into the digital age, CS must serve as a central component of every student’s PK-12 education. In expanding access to quality CS courses and programs, we are ensuring that all children are prepared to take advantage of the life-changing opportunities awaiting them in the field of computing. As we enter the second year of our collaboration with AT&T, we’re thrilled to increase the number of opportunities available to teachers and students,” said Cullen White, Director of CS Initiatives at Teach For America.

“The benefits of CS opportunities in South Carolina are two-fold. First, it helps students develop the technological skills they need to succeed in college and career. Second, it opens the door to new and exciting opportunities for students in our rural communities by providing them with a platform that connects their ideas and perspectives to the rest of the world. As we work to narrow the digital divide and showcase the brilliance of our students, we’re so thankful for AT&T’s support in introducing more students to CS,” said Josh Bell, Executive Director of Teach For America – South Carolina and member of the South Carolina CS Education Taskforce.

Only 1 in 4 schools nationwide offer CS classes, leaving many students—particularly students of color and those from low-income communities—without the foundational skills, exposure to teachers with CS backgrounds, and hands-on learning experiences to pursue CS in college and career. With over 500,000 jobs in computing available in the United States, but only 43,000 CS students entering the workforce, the lack of early CS experiences prevents many promising students from taking advantage of the benefits computing has to offer. Five of the fastest-growing occupations in the country are computing occupations, and computing-related jobs provide among the highest entry-level salaries available to those holding a bachelor’s degree. Efforts to reverse this disparity must begin with bolstering Pre-K-12 CS education and expanding access to all students.

Shelley Saxena is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sevamob, which operates 18 mobile clinics in India and South Africa that provide care for more than 20,000 people each month. Shelley is using his entrepreneurial background to redefine expectations about the cost of quality healthcare for low-income patients. Sevamob’s clinics provide critical access to primary and preventive care using a subscription-based model.

“Eighty percent of the care we provide is on site so the patient, first of all, does not have to travel, and they get the service when they want it and … where they want it, and I think that’s the biggest benefit,” Shelley says in this video. “You might think that this costs a whole lot. Guess what? In India, we are sustainably providing our mobile clinic services for $10 per person, per year.”

The Pfizer Foundation recently awarded Global Health Innovation Grants to 15 organizations, including Sevamob, that are using innovative approaches to address healthcare challenges in underserved communities around the world. Sevamob is using its Global Health Innovation Grant to set up new mobile clinics in impoverished neighborhoods in two states of India and in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The grand winner of the Gildan Leadership category this year was Charles-David Beaudoin, a hockey player with Les Patriotes de l’UQTR. Charles-David initiated the project ‘Guerrier du match’ which enabled sick children to attend a hockey match. He is also a volunteer trainer within diverse organizations in the region.

“We are inspired by the determination and focus that these young athletes represent, not only to advance their sport, but to maintain their academic performance and also give back to their communities,” said Garry Bell, Vice-President Corporate Communications and Marketing.  “Our goal is to support these individuals who serve as role models for others who strive to pursue excellence in all aspects of their lives.”

At the foundation’s 31th gala, held on November 30th, Gildan granted scholarships to five student-athletes, bringing our total sponsorship to more than $112,000 since 2005. During the evening, the Foundation presented 86 student-athletes with grants totaling $230,750. These grants reward academic excellence in combination with the pursuit of high level sport, highlighting the individual’s leadership and perseverance.

Funds will improve the lives of children, families and seniors in communities across the United States

SOURCE:Caterpillar

DESCRIPTION:

PEORIA, Ill., December 6, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) employees and retirees together with the Caterpillar Foundation have pledged more than $11.5 million to United Way agencies across the United States as part of its 2016-2017 campaign.  This amount includes a dollar-for-dollar matching grant from the Caterpillar Foundation. The United Way has been Caterpillar’s only annual solicitation for funds to its employees and retirees for more than 60 years.

“Our employees and retirees are committed to making a positive impact in the communities where they live and work,” said Caterpillar Foundation President Michele Sullivan. “That’s why they continue to donate every year to the United Way even during these challenging economic times to support their communities, neighbors and sometimes even their families and friends. More than half the money raised will go to the Heart of Illinois United Way in Peoria, Illinois, which is home to our corporate headquarters. Outside of Peoria, our employees and retirees give just as generously and their contributions are from Nashville, Tennessee, to Corinth, Mississippi, to San Diego, California, and more.”

Since the Caterpillar Foundation began investing in the United Way, employees and retirees have been able to designate their contributions to the United Way of their choice.

“The United Way assesses the community needs, finds efficient programs that deliver measurable outcomes and works to eliminate those needs in the future by identifying the causes and creating long-term solutions,” said Sullivan. “That’s done through the Boys & Girls Clubs,

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, The Salvation Army and the hundreds of other United Way-funded agencies.”

Employees and retirees pledged more than $5.7 million, and Caterpillar’s overall employee participation in 2016 reached 47 percent.

“On behalf of more than 500 local United Ways and our member agencies, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the unwavering support and volunteer leadership of Caterpillar employees,” said Michael Stephan, President of the Heart of Illinois United Way.  “Caterpillar’s steadfast commitment in partnering with United Way to ensure vital programs are available that positively impact the education, income and health of our communities is truly humbling. United Ways, and the communities we serve, tremendously benefit from the generous investments of the Caterpillar Foundation and all the employees and retirees who graciously give back to communities where they live and work.”

Caterpillar also has two international United Way campaigns. One is in Panama, and the other is in Mexico.

Aflac Sponsors The Washington Post’s Chasing Cancer Event

DESCRIPTION:

WASHINGTON, DC, December 7, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Aflac, the leader in voluntary insurance sales at the worksite in the United States, today sponsored Chasing Cancer, a live program hosted by The Washington Post. The event took place on Tuesday, December 6th at The Washington Post headquarters in Washington, D.C. Aflac CEO Dan Amos and Aflac Foundation President Kathelen Amos were among the speakers at the event.

Chasing Cancer brought together leading scientists, health-care innovators, patients and policymakers who discussed advances in cancer care and treatment. They examined how the U.S. health-care system is shaped by a disease that touches the lives of millions of people, and provided new insights on the host of challenges cancer presents. The event was streamed live and video clips are archived on The Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/post-live-2016-Chasing-Cancer-Summit/).

“As a company that has contributed more than $110 million toward finding a cure for childhood cancer we could not be more pleased to have sponsored The Washington Post’s ambitious forum that shined a bright light on a disease that impacts so many people, including more than 15,000 children each year,” Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos said. “Aflac employees and our independent sales agents who continue to contribute every month to this cause are committed to helping families facing cancer each and every day.”

”We were pleased to have Aflac as the presenting sponsor for Chasing Cancer. This was an important discussion that convened leaders and innovators committed to cancer research and improving the lives of those with cancer,” said Kristine Coratti, Vice President of Communications and Events for The Washington Post.

According to the American Cancer Society, each year more than 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with a form of cancer. Yet of all the government funding that goes toward cancer treatments and research, less than 5% is allocated toward childhood cancers.

“While we are extremely fortunate that Aflac has continued to embrace our cause for more than 21 years, the childhood cancer community needs more help,” Dr. Douglas Graham, director of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta said. “We could not have become a U.S. News and World Report top 10 children’s cancer facility in the United States without the generosity of Aflac and its agents, but researchers simply need more funding to make our dream of curing childhood cancer become a reality. Every child deserves a lifetime.”

Takeaways from the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Purpose and Progress Conference

SOURCE:PYXERA Global

DESCRIPTION:

The three “Ps” of sustainability—People, Planet, and Profit (or Prosperity—which engenders more inclusivity)—have become the standard for leading companies for a decade or more.  Aaron Hurst has just added a fourth “P:” Purpose.

Opening the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s 2016 Corporate Citizenship Conference, “Purpose and Progress,” Hurst, the CEO of Imperative and Founder of the Taproot Foundation, shared the research his firm has developed which explores the power of purpose for individuals and its effect on organizations toward creating greater productivity and innovation.

“Purpose isn’t a cause, a revelation, or a luxury,” noted Hurst.  “It’s an established segment of talent based on why we work.” Compared to employees who are status oriented or money oriented, Hurst’s research shows that “purpose-driven professionals are the most valuable talent:  30% more high performers; 40% more likely to be in leadership positions and 11% longer tenure.”
