Pfizer Foundation Grantee Afya Research Africa Seeks to Improve “Health and Wealth” of Underserved Communities

Sam Gwer is the Executive Director of Afya Research Africa, which operates a network of clinics in Kenya that aim to improve primary care in underserved, rural areas. The organization currently operates 11 clinics in farming and fishing communities, serving 15,000 people.

“We have really empowered communities, and they can see value and the need to participate,” Sam explains in this video. “This is empowering because then with this intervention, we’re able to make an impact on health and wealth.”

Afya Research Africa is one of 15 organizations that was recently awarded a Pfizer Foundation Global Health Innovation Grant, which aims support organizations and social entrepreneurs that are employing innovative solutions to improve healthcare delivery for underserved individuals. Afya Research Africa is using its Global Health Innovation Grant to build four additional clinics in Kenya, increasing access to clinical services and essential products while giving underserved communities a chance to reinvest earnings in their health.
