DESCRIPTION:

Max Scherzer is raising money with each strikeout he throws this season. After his twenty strikeout performance Wednesday night, he’s off to a great start.

Scherzer and his wife, Erica, are joining the nonprofit organization, Polaris, to help eradicate modern slavery.

Polaris, named after the North Star that guided slaves to freedom in the U.S., now has a star of its own.

The Scherzers recently launched two programs that provide opportunities for their fans to support their efforts.

Strike Out Modern Slavery encourages fans to pledge a donation for every strikeout Scherzer throws this season. Fans can set a donation amount for each strikeout, ranging from 31 cents (Scherzer’s uniform number) to $10.

Autographs & Athletes is the second program in Scherzer’s efforts. Fans who make an online donation to Polaris can receive an item signed by Scherzer.

Items such as Scherzer photos and baseball cards, Washington Nationals ticket stubs and baseballs can be mailed to Polaris’s office after making an online donation.

Donations raised through the programs will help support Polaris’s operation of the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The hotline is a confidential lifeline for victims and survivors of human trafficking.

The Scherzers will match donations at the end of the season up to $25,000 for each fundraiser.

The three-time All-Star is on a mission to help Polaris shine even brighter.
