Practical tips for communicating consistently and effectively

SOURCE:Versaic

DESCRIPTION:

For the next two weeks, we’ll explore the topic of communicating CSR initiatives. This week, we’re fortunate to hear from an expert on the matter, Jennifer Risi from Ogilvy. Next week, Versaic CEO Burt Cummings will weigh in on communicating with authenticity.

By Jennifer Risi, WW Chief Communications Officer & Managing Director, Managing Director, Ogilvy Media Influence at Ogilvy

A key challenge for many companies is communicating CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities that remain true to their brand. As communicators, we have a responsibility to help our clients understand what will make their CSR initiatives impactful, relatable and inspiring. Convincing consumers that profitable companies are being good citizens for the betterment of society is no easy task; however, there are a few fundamental points to consider that can help accomplish the goal.

We’re all in this together

The entire organization should be telling the same story. This is where educating the organization’s staff is vital. Employees need to understand why their contribution is important so they can become advocates who help support and share the program’s goals with others. This not only helps the organization share one voice, employees also gain intrinsic value when they recognize their company has a strong CSR program that truly supports employees’ values.

Communicate wisely

An organization’s communications should not focus solely on its CSR initiatives. Instead, these initiatives should complement the company’s overall brand. When done correctly, CSR efforts will be acknowledged organically. While it is important for companies to explain what they are doing and why, CSR efforts should not come off as self-serving or simply a way for the company to seek media attention.

The media can be your friend

It is always good practice to include an integrated mix of earned, owned and paid media when telling any story. Yet, traditional media truly carries weight when it comes to CSR. It’s important for companies to have a comprehensive knowledge about their media contacts in terms of what they cover, as well as current events that would pique their interest. Having a good understanding about how the company’s CSR efforts can help a reporter cover a story that’s relevant to their audience is essential.

Nothing but the facts

There is nothing wrong with a company bragging (just a little) about its accomplishments. But if their communications don’t include facts to back up the boast, it’s a missed opportunity to inform with a greater impact. Let’s face it, CSR initiatives have gone mainstream; therefore, corporations need to be smart about how they communicate their success stories. How do companies know if they’ve connected with their audience? When they talk back! Use facts to ensure the audience is responding to the right things.

See me for me

When presenting clients’ CSR initiatives, the activities should be integrated into the company’s larger business model and demonstrate that the benefits are expressly for the greater good of society.

Ogilvy not only supports philanthropy by advocating for a great number of organizations and educational institutions, it also creates award-winning campaigns that inspire movements and produce results for its clients’ respective causes.

For example, Ogilvy client, Pfizer Inc. felt a social responsibility to educate the community about the importance of childhood vaccinations. Together with the client, the agency developed an educational campaign to raise awareness about the importance of timely adherence to the CDC-recommended immunization schedule, and to address common questions parents often have about vaccinating their children. The program sought not only to educate parents who may not fully understand the benefits of vaccination, it also recognized and celebrated vaccination as an important developmental milestone in children’s lives.

In another example, Ogilvy used insightful information from the energy industry to help Americans become more energy efficient. After learning that the U.S. consumes a jaw-dropping 20 percent of the world’s electricity (second only to China), the agency devised an innovative plan to combine the rapidly-growing adoption of plug-in electric vehicles with energy conservation in the home.

Understanding that the number of plug-in electric vehicles that share the same energy source as a home is steadily on the rise, Ogilvy recognized the opportunity for cross-industry partnership rather than relying on one single industry alone to evoke the change needed to truly impact energy conservation. Based on this insight, MyEnergi Lifestyle® (MEL), a collaboration between Ogilvy’s client, Ford along with SunPower, Whirlpool, Eaton, Nest, Infineon and Georgia Tech University was born. MEL shows homeowners how to save money on appliances and fuel through energy-efficient living. The idea was to show that the transportation and housing sectors could converge to teach Americans easy and affordable ways to use energy more efficiently.

In both examples, the client set clear objectives, created conversation, educated the community in smart decision-making, and made a positive impact – all while remaining loyal to their brands.

With a growing number of organizations joining the social good trend, it has become even more challenging to break through the clutter. Consumers are more likely to take notice of companies that participate in CSR initiatives that are representative of their brand.

An effective CSR strategy is one that is honest, supportive and communicated consistently. Success is achievable when companies share meaningful stories and create programs that inspire the business world to help society build a better tomorrow for everyone.

Wells Fargo Launches ApprenticeshipUSA Program for Veterans

Wells Fargo is one of the first financial industry services companies to offer the program to veterans

SAN FRANCISCO, May 18, 2017 /3BL Media/ –In honor of National Military Appreciation Month,Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) today announced it has launched its ApprenticeshipUSA program for veterans.  A Department of Labor program, ApprenticeshipUSA offers companies the tools needed to develop a highly skilled workforce and provides veterans the opportunity to earn a salary while learning additional skills necessary to succeed in high-demand civilian careers. In addition to ApprenticeshipUSA, Wells Fargo offers other veteran career transition initiatives, including the Veteran Employment Transition (VET) Internship Program, American Corporate Partners  mentorships, and scholarships and emergency grants through Scholarship America.

“Our commitment to hiring veterans remains a top priority for Wells Fargo,” said Carly Sanchez, EVP, head of Talent Acquisition Strategy & Delivery at Wells Fargo. “The ApprenticeshipUSA program is an excellent resource for us to attract and retain eligible veterans who have strong leadership competencies and other skills, but may not have strong financial industry knowledge.”

ApprenticeshipUSA allows eligible veterans to use their GI Bill education benefits to receive a tax-free monthly payment. The Post-9/11 GI Bill payment is the equivalent of the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) of an enlisted rank five (E-5) with dependents (varies by employer location). It is paid by the government in addition to the wages earned as an apprentice and veterans receive a payment for every month of their apprenticeship. After six months of a veteran’s apprenticeship, the payment is gradually reduced – and is offset by progressive wage increases.

The ApprenticeshipUSA Program will be piloted in the company’s Community Bank, Consumer Lending, and Payments, Virtual Solutions and Innovation divisions.  For more information about the pilot and where to apply, please visit: https://www.wellsfargojobs.com/military

Igniting Opportunity for Cape Town’s Youth

Part IV: SAP Social Sabbatical Partners to Shape Cape Town’s Future

SOURCE:PYXERA Global

DESCRIPTION:

This is part four in a series highlighting the SAP Social Sabbatical for global engagement in Cape Town, South Africa, which focused on bridging the digital and education divide in the city’s most underserved communities. Read part onetwo, and three here.

South Africa is home to some of the world’s best universities, but the average young South African likely won’t step foot on any of the country’s prestigious campuses. The legacy of apartheid has perpetuated an economic and education system inaccessible to the vast majority of youth. According to the Public Council of Higher Education in South Africa, only 16 percent of black South Africans go to college—the country is 80 percent black. Access to tertiary education has emerged as a common issue of discourse in South Africa’s political and social landscape as students across the country protest rising tuition costs and unequal access.

In an economy where quality education is necessary for employment, yet unaffordable to most students, the country is facing a gap in skilled labor. This education crisis has fueled a dangerous level of youth unemployment in South Africa; the World Economic Forum ranked the country with the third highest unemployment rate in the world for people between the ages of 15 to 24.

Recognizing this enormous gap in education access, TSiBA, a unique, private, nonprofit business school, was founded in 2004 to enable talented students from underserved communities to become active participants in the South African economy. TSiBA’s mission is to provide full scholarships and academic programs at the tertiary level to talented students who would not otherwise have the resources to continue their education. Since opening its doors 12 years ago to a small group of talented students on a single campus in Cape Town, TSiBA has grown its academic offering to two campuses, four qualifications, and to nearly 500 registered students.

Inclusion Works — Opportunities for Those with Disabilities

DESCRIPTION:

JetBlue’s operations embody much of the change we want to see for people with disabilities. But the road is long, and we can’t do it alone.

Internally, we create job opportunities and promote inclusion through frameworks like the Reaching Blue Heights talent pipeline program, Disability Career Fairs, and Disability Mentoring Day (DMD). Out in the world, we show up and speak out.

In 2015, we ran an in-flight video feature on all flights to raise awareness about disability. In 2016, more than 100 crewmembers marched with the Henry Viscardi School in NYC’s Disability Pride Parade. We also volunteered at their Whiskey Flight fundraising event.

Nearly 1 in 5 Americans has a disability, and 10% of those are invisible disabilities. If more businesses tailored talent acquisition and customer services to these communities – imagine the possibilities.

Program Sponsored by CSX supports community projects that will distribute more than 1.7 million pounds of food each year in Nash and Edgecombe Counties

SOURCE:CSX Corporation

DESCRIPTION:

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., May 18, 2017 /3BL Media/ - The Conservation Fund today announced the grant recipients for the On Track with Healthy Foods grants program, sponsored by CSX. Nine community- and faith-based groups will receive grants to increase access to healthy foods in vulnerable and underserved communities in the Twin Counties.

The On Track with Healthy Foods grants program was created to enhance the delivery capabilities of food producers, processors and distributors in Nash and Edgecombe Counties, as well as improve the availability of fresh produce and perishable foods. The nine grantees will use the funds to acquire equipment and resources needed to sustain food quality and safety as they sell, store, package and distribute more than 1.7 million pounds of fresh produce, meats, seafood, dairy and other foods to nearby consumers annually.

“The organizations selected for the On Track grants are doing critical work in the Twin Counties to provide triple-bottom-line benefits that integrate environmental stewardship, community economic development and social justice to address the challenges facing distressed areas,” said Mikki Sager, vice president and director of Resourceful Communities at The Conservation Fund. “We will continue to work with the grantees, providing technical assistance and capacity building, to help them expand their efforts to make healthy, fresh food affordable and accessible to everyone.”

“CSX is proud to partner with The Conservation Fund in support of the On Track with Healthy Foods grant program to improve access to healthy food choices in communities that are underserved,” said John Dillard, CSX resident vice president for state relations. “This national partnership with the Fund provides CSX an opportunity to effectively leverage its resources at the local level to address the areas in Nash and Edgecombe Counties that are most in need.”

Track One Grants

Grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, have been awarded to:

Conetoe Family Life Center
The Conetoe Family Life Center was established in 2007 to improve the health of young people and the community by increasing access to healthy foods, increasing congregants’ physical activities and providing access to health services. The Center will use the grant to leverage federal funding from the USDA’s Rural Community Development Initiative in order to expand and replicate its programs with multiple churches for the benefit and empowerment of community members in Nash and Edgecombe Counties.

Nash Community College
Nash Community College will use the grant to support its Healthy Campus Initiative, which focuses on providing healthy food options at the campus cafe and building capacity to preserve food donations. This project will install equipment that will enable the Midway Cafe to display and serve healthy, affordable hot and cold meals, as well as reduce food waste on campus by preserving breads baked in the culinary program classes and distributing them through the United Community Ministries.

A Touch of the Father’s Love
A Touch of the Father’s Love in Battleboro provides a faith-based food pantry for residents in need. The group will use the grant to purchase a refrigerated trailer that will enable them to pick up donations of a broader variety of healthy foods, including produce and dairy, and distribute them to over 2,050 households in Nash and Edgecombe Counties.

United Community Ministries
United Community Ministries (UCM) in Rocky Mount is a non-profit organization composed of local religious, governmental and private supporters who are committed to addressing the needs of the homeless and nearly homeless populations in Nash and Edgecombe Counties. UCM increases food security and reduces food waste by picking up surplus, “best by” produce and other foods from local restaurants, grocery stores and Walmart and distributing the foods through eight community and faith groups, senior housing facilities, shelters and community kitchens. The organization will use the grant to upgrade a box truck used for food distribution to food insecure individuals.

Track Two Grants

Grants ranging up to $40,000, supporting efforts involving three or more groups working together to strengthen food value chain connections from field to fork, have been awarded to:

Tarboro Community Outreach, Inc.
Tarboro Community Outreach (TCO) is a non-profit agency that serves needy families and individuals in Edgecombe County. In a region that has been plagued with a number of natural disasters and economic hardships, TCO gives support to people in need by offering a soup kitchen, homeless shelter and transitional housing facilities serving communities countywide. The agency will use the grant to purchase a pickup truck and will work in partnership with two food banks, Interfaith Food Shuttle, four grocery stores, the USDA and several trucking companies to provide enhanced nutrition education and food distribution of over 570,000 pounds of food per year to vulnerable residents.

Opportunities Industrialization Center Family Medical Center
Opportunities Industrialization Center Family Medical Center (OICFMC) in Rocky Mount provides comprehensive employment, training, business and health services that strengthen opportunities for people in local communities. OICFMC will use the grant to provide healthy fruits and vegetables and nutrition education for at-risk and diabetic patients in Edgecombe and Nash Counties. It also will purchase locally-grown healthy produce from Conetoe Family Life Center, and support healthy food production in Rocky Mount Housing Authority’s neighborhood gardens.

Project Momentum
Project Momentum of Rocky Mount will use the grant to support the Twin Counties Families Understanding Nutrition (FUN) project, which will provide locally grown food for 100 low-income residents who are diabetic or pre-diabetic with companion nutrition education. Project Momentum will provide vouchers for produce purchases and will partner with Conetoe Family Life Center and other farmers to provide locally-grown produce. They will also use the grant to provide workshops and healthy cooking classes with Impact Center, Voices of Women Servants and the Community Enrichment Organization.

Rocky Mount/Edgecombe Community Development Corporation
Since its inception in 1988, Rocky Mount/Edgecombe Community Development Corporation (RMECDC), has served as an economic development engine for Rocky Mount and the Twin Counties by creating jobs, helping residents obtain and retain home ownership, providing small business counseling and helping citizens build a better quality of life. RMECDC will use the grant to develop infrastructure for the Fresh and Healthy Food Marketplace at the 30-acre retail and business park, Crossing at 64. In partnership with Operation Spring Plant, Solomon's Farm 1942, Conetoe Family Life Center and the North Carolina Association of Community Development Corporations, RMECDC will coordinate mobile markets, food trucks and a stationary area for farmers to park and sell fresh fruits and vegetables on the mixed-use site.

Working Landscapes
Working Landscapes creates more sustainable livelihoods for people through stewardship of natural and cultural assets. The organization will use the grant to support What's Growing On, a new farm-to-fork value chain supporting low-income populations in Nash County through collaboration with educational institutions. Equipment, including a mobile culinary lab, will be purchased to process and provide sweet potatoes and specialty sweet potato foods to Head Start childcare centers and public schools, in partnership with Down East Partnership for Children, Nash Community College and Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools.

In July 2016, CSX joined the State of North Carolina and Carolinas Gateway Partnership in announcing Rocky Mount, North Carolina, as the home for the Carolina Connector intermodal rail terminal, which will serve as a major transportation hub in the Southeastern U.S. and a catalyst for economic growth. Recognizing that limited access to fresh produce, dairy, meats, and seafood is an issue for many in Edgecombe and Nash counties, CSX made addressing this critical need an immediate priority and created the On Track with Healthy Foods grants program with The Conservation Fund.

School Head Rebaone Maseba said: “The challenges that the school has been facing is that the classroom the pupils with learning difficulties have been using is congested and this posed challenges to the students’ needs and affected their studies. The new classroom block has greatly improved conditions.”

DESCRIPTION:

We’ve all been there, walking the aisles of the store or browsing online when a compelling message pops up saying “Buy this product and make a difference!” Before you know it you’ve got a lifetime supply of dish soap to help oil-spill affected animals and everyone’s getting pink dish towels for Christmas because Breast Cancer needs a cure. You can’t remember why you were shopping in the first place, but it sure feels good to know you’re doing your part!

Mary Kay’s Beauty That Counts® program is a lot like that - buy the limited edition selected product, apply and admire your new gorgeous shade, hit the town with confidence knowing you made a difference in someone’s life. Win-win, right?

Since its launch in 2008, the Beauty That Counts® program has donated millions of dollars to worthy organizations from Hong Kong to Russia and everywhere in between helping victims of domestic violence, educating teen mothers, providing food for underprivileged children, bringing comfort to cancer patients, and so much more.

Here in the US, Mary Kay donates $1 from each Beauty That Counts item sold toward The Mary Kay Foundation’s efforts to bring an end to domestic violence through their shelter grants program. This provides critical support, shelter and confidence for survivors of domestic violence.

Curious how the Beauty That Counts program provides life-changing support around the world? Some of our global markets shared how their Beauty That Counts partners and efforts are making a difference in their communities.

Rosy Guerra, MK Mexico shared, “Beauty that Counts is a program that is dear to my heart. Statistics show that 7 out of 10 women suffer some form of violence in Mexico. Working with Alternativas Pacíficas, a non-profit organization that provides shelter for women in difficult relationships, Mary Kay Mexico has helped more than a thousand women, providing psychological support, legal counsel and shelter.”

EJ Kim, Mary Kay Korea said, “A mother’s dream is to see her children grow to be happy and successful, therefore we decided to build libraries for children from underprivileged families where they can learn and dream of a better future. Mary Kay Korea has donated 33 Pink Dream Libraries across the country since 2008 working with Childfund Korea (one of the largest professional child welfare organizations in the country).”

Andrea Querido, Mary Kay Canada commented, “Each Beauty That Counts® donation benefits the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation in its efforts to assist women living with cancer through the Look Good Feel Better® program and supports women affected by domestic violence through grants to women’s shelters across the country. This year, we will donate $2 from each sale to support the Foundation and its heartfelt mission.”

Get your blush brush ready for this year’s limited edition Baked Cheek Powder offered in two shades - Kind Heart and Giving Heart.

Cubs Pitcher Jon Lester Saddles Up for Team #NVRQT

Lester, a cancer survivor, goes to bat for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

Chicago Cubs pitcher, Jon Lester, has built quite the résumé through his first decade-plus in the majors, helping to win two World Series with the Boston Red Sox and adding another last year with the Cubs. Jon has also made four All-Star appearances, won an NLCS MVP award and a Babe Ruth Award, and has even pitched a no-hitter.

But his major-league journey, as many people know, was far from smooth sailing. Back in August 2006, Lester experienced back pains which he thought stemmed from a car crash earlier that month. Jon was later diagnosed with a treatable form of anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Lester underwent chemotherapy during the off-season. Four months after his diagnosis, a CT scan showed no signs of the disease.

As a cancer survivor, Lester is now on a mission to fight cancer and raise awareness. The left-hander supports the Never Quit (NVRQT) campaign, which is run by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.

According to NVRQT’s official website, their goal is to strikout pediatric cancer. “It is our warriors and patients whom we fight by funding life-saving pediatric cancer research,” the website states. You can learn more about Lester’s NVRQT campaign, here.

Lester, along with the NVRQT campaign, has hosted events to raise funds and awareness. But last year, he and his wife, Farrah, switched things up a bit with a country-themed occasion. It went so well that cowboy boots will be appropriate again this year.

On July 5, 2017, Jon, Farrah, Cubs players and coaches will host a country concert at Joe’s Bar in Chicago that will feature a “nationally recognized country music recording artist.”

“I feel like we’re really taking off here in Chicago,” Lester said at last year’s event. “I feel like last year we hit the ground running here and the people we met last year are really starting to come together and making a lot of strides in pediatric cancer.”

Major Leaguers are #GoingToBat for causes near and dear to them, as they personify the Players Trust’s motto to ‘care, act and inspire.” To learn more about the charitable interests and activities of Jon Lester and other Major Leaguers, please visit the Major League Baseball Players Trust website.

DESCRIPTION:

NORTHBROOK, Ill., May 22, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- More than 100 Allstate agency owners from around the country sorted and stuffed 2,400 backpacks with books and loaded them onto Chicago Public Library trucks at Navy Pier on Wed., May 17. The backpacks, which included books tailored for preschool, elementary and middle school students, were delivered to all 80 Chicago Public Library branches and will be distributed to youth this summer.

The event was part of The Allstate Foundation Helping Hands® program, which inspires and enables Allstate agency owners to volunteer and give back to their communities. As part of the program, agency owners who volunteer four or more hours can secure $1,000 grants to the nonprofits where they volunteer. Last year, The Allstate Foundation provided over $5.5 million in Helping Hands grants to recognize more than 3,000 Allstate agency owner volunteers across the country. Agency owners participating in the backpack volunteer event will be encouraged to support similar projects benefiting young people in their hometowns.

The Helping Hands event is one example of the Allstate and The Allstate Foundation’s efforts to empower youth to realize their full potential as part of its Good Starts Young℠ initiative.

  • The Allstate Foundation is a National Co-Title Sponsor of WE Charity, a nonprofit organization empowering young people to change the world, and WE Schools, a yearlong educational program, which provides educators with resources to encourage students to broaden their understanding of world issues and take action on societal issues. To learn more, visit www.goodstartsyoung.org.

  • The Allstate Foundation’s #THEYSAY Project challenges youth to defy negative stereotypes by empowering them to share their stories of the good they do every day via social media, using #theysay. In doing so, they demonstrate that youth are problem solvers and change-makers. Last year, The Allstate Foundation reached millions of youth through this project. To learn more, go to www.theysayproject.com.

“Our agency owners are passionate about empowering youth to achieve success in their lives,” said Vicky Dinges, Allstate’s senior vice president of corporate responsibility. “We’ve made it our mission at Allstate and The Allstate Foundation to help America’s youth gain the skills, resources and confidence to become our future leaders. That’s why we’re so excited to partner with the Chicago Public Library on this effort.”

Allstate Insurance Company and Chicago Public Library (CPL) have partnered on various initiatives over several years. Allstate was a longtime lead supporter of the Library's One Book, One Chicago program for adults, and most recently, supported teen programming in CPL's YOUmedia with a gift to the Chicago Public Library Foundation.

"Chicago's philanthropic community plays an important role in our library programming through gifts to our Library Foundation," said Brian Bannon, Chicago Public Library Commissioner. "We are so grateful to these Allstate employees and agency owners for donating their time today, and for The Allstate Foundation's generosity in helping serve our youngest patrons this summer."

About The Allstate Foundation
Established in 1952, The Allstate Foundation is an independent, charitable organization made possible by subsidiaries of The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL).
